right both my amp and distortion sound is awful, so im on the look out for new gear.

amp-wise- looking for a good loud combo, 1x12 preferred. dont mind solid state stuff, as long as it is loud and portable with a good clean channel. built in effects arent needed at all. budget is around £300

distortion- need a new pedal for this, my ds-2 is really fuzzy (though that might be the amp), so something smoother is needed. something simple and well built is all im looking for. budget is <£70.

:) any help would be greatly appreciated. once this is sorted i'm gonna see about some bkp for my sg...

For the amp, Laney LC-15 look really good for the money, I havent actually played one though. If you can save a bit more, maybe the LC or VC 30 combos? I have never played a Laney but heard great things and recordings I've heard of them sound amazing.

For the pedal, if you get a valve amp with good distorted rhythm tone, you might just want an overdrive instead of a distortion to push it a bit further. I use my Keeley RAT to boost my broken up clean channel which sounds great. Hope that helps atall

Amp-wise look for a used Peavey Ultra Tube 112. you will not be disappointed! :)

I posted a link elsewhere on this site, search around for it, but you can get an LC-15 or LC-15R very cheaply at the flying pig website. Pound for pound I'd say it's one of the best bargains out there. And it's all valve, as for built in effects it's kind of minimal, but as it falls over £100 shy of your budget you can buy effects.

well something more powerful than 15w is needed really. looking for about 50w minimum, i'll check out that peavey, but keep the indeas comin'

15w valve should be pretty loud though, and doesnt it have a speaker output?

If your after a solid state, I actually quite liked the Fender Stage 1600, amazing cleans aswell, may be over your budget though. However I still think valves are best for distortion/overdriven sounds.

Who needs clean anyway :twisted: You can always roll off the guitar volume for an ok-ish clean though.

i like the fender Roc pro 700 as far as hybrid combos go. pretty nice clean channel, tube preamp, so the distortion is much more organic sounding than true SS amps. sounds pretty damn nice if you ask me

for effects.. no idea =P

I tested a Lancy LC 15 combo with an EMMA ReezaFratRitz distortion pedal and it was beautiful. And i mean beutiful, oooooooooooooooooo, its making me feel funny.... lol. The Emma pedal isnt stocked at many places but try and get one, at £120 you cant go wrong, it really is immense.

Just to add, Wattage never really correlates to how loud something is, trust me, Matamp make a 2watt, head, that aint quiet!

thanks a lot guys, i was thinking of the laney's, but worried about 15w not being enough. usually in the rehersal rooms i have jcm 900, or dsl100 heads and the volume is maxed on the clean channel, with the gain up at 5 or 6, and im just heard over our drummer. shame only one place near me stocks laney, gonna pester them this week :D

I don't want to sound disparaging about Laneys or any of the previous comments but my original recomendation to look for a Peavey Ultra Tube 112 fits the kind of profile you originally put forward. It's a 60 watt 1 x 12 combo with lots of features. The clean channel is really clean and the overdrive channels are excellent. There's all the inputs / outputs you could ever need and having spent several hours, admittedly a few years ago, back to backing this amp with Marshalls, Fenders, Laneys, and all comers this amp came out top. I think for a compact combo its one of the best valve amps ever made and is completely different from the mainstream Peavey SS combos that it is unfortunately associated with. It even has selectable output impedance settings for an extension cab. They originally retailed at about £700 but are now well inside your budget second hand. This amp is in a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT LEAGUE to anything else mentioned so far!!

fair enough about the peavey, but its not as easy to come by as the laneys, thanks a lot guys :D so will the 15w laney be loud enough for up to medium sized gigs? or does it need an extention cab?
