yeah i'm sure you're all scared to listen as always. i recorded something i'm a bit better at, even though i only pick up the classical once every few weeks or so. anyway, take a listen to Dee. i also just recorded a blues improv, but it sucks and i know it. ha.

thanks guys.

Well, I dont know what vibe you wanted to go for - saying things about how clean playing is in blues is kinda niether here nor there, depends what the player was going for....but it aint in tune.

Keep em coming dude, hack at it, nil illegitamus carborundum and all that (and it would seem I'm the bar-steward here!)

bit of improvement maybe?
Video what you do and you'd get loads of feedback on the technique if you wanted it

The blues one was what I commented on.

Dee is a lot better. Not nailed, but I'm not entirely sure what one could consider 'nailed' for a studio outtake - the original is rather meandering! Good effort though. I wouldnt have let you get away with it as a proper take if I were recording you, but its good.

Mix wise, the bass is rather boomy, but the playing is OK.

What I want to see you do (for your own sake, not as a 'I bet you cant' type 'want to see you do') is get back to double tracking rhythm guitars. That was what you needed to work on last time (or last I heard your recordings), so hows the practice coming?

yeah, the blues was terrible.

as for dee, to be honest i haven't listened to the song in ages, so i forget what it sounds like. obviously that doesn't make up for missed and dead notes, but i think i could do a little better. i also agree about the bass. i tried to cut some of it out with my mixer, but i didn't really like the sound, so i ended up just leaving it.

i'm surprised you've remembered my previous playing and what i needed to work on. to be honest, it means a lot.

the practice has actually slowed down a bit recently... i was on vacation for three out of the last four weeks, and this past week i actually got a drum set. but at least i'm playing daily which i never did before.

about the double tracking... i wrote a song that i'm going to attempt to record sometime soon, once i can get the drumming up to speed. hopefully that'll give a better representation of what i can do. my recordings might not show it, but i think i've improved a lot since those last recordings.

thanks again for the comments/criticisms.

as if my blues jam wasn't bad enough, i decided to come back the next day with not only a full song, but i played two instruments on it!

so i just uploaded a new song. i made my first attempt at a full song (guitars and drums)... decided to try californication out. i know its not perfect, and falls in and out of timing... but i've only been drumming for about 5 days or so now, so give me a little slack. also, the solo is quite funny, i have no excuse for that.   also, i learned like 80% of this song (guitars and drums) this afternoon, so some parts i just kind of did whatever the hell i felt like (explains the solo a little...).

anyway, i wanted to record something with my new drumset, the yamaha dtxpress (old version). i quite like it, but then again, i've never played anything else to compare to. i think it sounds decent though, and its quite fun!

so let me know what you think, be honest, as usual. i know its not great, but i'm quite proud of it. i surprised myself with how quickly i picked up the drums.

its at the same link.

Will check it out later.

Quite welcome for comments. They are rather similar to the ones that an audio engineer friend of mine gave to me when I was first recorded! (by him) - we all go through this; learning that recording, metal in particular due to the consistency and precision required, is another order of magnitude above what you thinks good just sitting and noodling. The main thing is learning to listen that much more closely, and increased precision follows the increased awareness of your $%&# ups, control timing and what not.

But anyway, enough of that, like I said, I'll check it later.

The timing and syncing of the double tracking on that was much, much better than last time, well done!

However

(there had to be a however, didnt there?)

The left and right tracks are randomly dropping out, try to keep your playing even and consistent; when doubling know EXACTLY what youre playing - every string hit, how many strings, how hard, what pick angle, the LOT. It sounds like your keeping time ok on both tracks but sometimes they arent playing the same thing.

Good immitation of the horrible solo!

Drummings a bit hard, really artificial, too, is it an electric kit or effected up in the daw? Timing on the drums is ok, though - for 5 days its very impressive indeed!

Tunings out in some parts - make sure youre in tune before every take!

thanks again for the mini review.

what you mentioned about consistency is something i'm working on now. i always used to think playing like that made me sound a bit better... than i started recording and noticed it just sounded really bad, and i've got a hard time breaking that habit.

ah, the solo.  :)

the drums are electronic, yes. i haven't bothered yet with trying to mess with the thing to get a better sound out of it. i've heard you can run some computer program though the brain and get really great sounds out of it, but i haven't a clue how. i'm going to try to find that out.

thanks again... any other comments, go right ahead.

well, the blues jam is back with some bite! well, its back anyway. i did another take on it (this is all for the dean forum... they're putting together a little song thing), and i think, THINK, that this one's a bit better. i went for more of a shred type solo, so it gets a bit sloppy, but i think i did a decent job of hiding a few mistakes.
criticisms as always appreciated.
