Pickups for a Suhr Modern
« on: July 21, 2009, 09:59:02 PM »
Need some help picking a pickup for a Suhr Modern heres what i sent to tim

"I will be getting a Suhr M1 Very soon it is a 24 fret bolt-on Guitar with a Alder Body,Maple Neck and Pau Ferro Board.
Looking for a Pickup that will be tight with a good amount output Sweet Rounded-off highs and since its alder A good amount of mids. (But still lets the guitar shine through)
Also a Huge Amount of clarity is needed under complex chords in hi-gain scenarios, While still having good cleans.

What im mainly looking for is a pickup that will do what Cold Sweats Did to my Les Paul (Coming from the cr@p Stock Gibson P-ups)
Dont need Anything Tighter than the CS but want as much thickness and sweet highs. "

Also open to Cosmetic Suggestions thinking A type of Chrome or Some type of Camo

i would say HolyDivers. i have never played a guitar with them but seeing what other people say about them they sound like what you want.

Sweet guitar!

Clarity and note defintion under high gain doesnt exactly narrow the BK range down; most can do that, even the A-Pig is better than most other pickups at it. But the best is probably the PK.

But the PK didnt agree too well with the closest guitar to that that I've heard one in (an ibby RG2570), so maybe a double screw pole or a c-bomb?

If you want the note defintion under high gain, I'd try to stay off the A5. Its not that it cant do it, its just ceramics better for it, being sharper and faster.

I Agree with that! Ceramics have a sweet spot in my heart the C-bomb sounds like the best bet and something ive been researching Since it will have a similar voicing to the coldsweat but wont be overbright with alder.
Also Ceramics are the best for live use they cut like a hot knife through butter

Sebby-

I've got an HD on the way for my Pro S1 (alder body, maple neck, RW FB), and I'll let you know how it sounds.  While it won't be exactly the same, how it sounds in the S1 should be fairly similar to how it would sound in your Modern.

And I think Chrome will look fantastic with the drip top :D

The guitar looks very good! Now, that alder + maple is a very versatile combination, which can take a lot of different pickups. When I asked Tim about a pickup set for a alder body / all-maple neck strat (brothers guitar), I also gave reference about what the CS set did to a PRS McCarty, which has a tone pretty much like an LP. Close to what you said here. I also gave some other references, and in the end was recommended a Nailbomb set. Worked wonderfully in that guitar, it being warm but clear, with a wonderful chime and a tight attack due to the maple fretboard.

Now the alder + maple is not scooped, it's balanced and tight. Many have referred the Pau ferro fretboard as being somewhere between rosewood and ebony. Which should mean that it has a crisper attack than rosewood and also more lows and highs.

I wouldn't rule out alnico and even lower output pickups. They have a wonderful dynamic clarity, and your Suhr has naturally tighter tone and more highs than an LP. So different that I would probably steer away from the CS/C-bomb family if you want the same kind of response than what happened with your LP..

Now like I said, the alder + maple is a very versatile combination. It works with the Nailbomb, it works with the HD. On the lower output scale, I would probably go with the Black dog (more mids and thicker than the Mule). Or maybe Emerald, which is supposed to be a bigger and hotter VHII.

If your getting a Suhr why not just get it will the Doug Aldrich set? I love BKP's, but those are fantastic pickups as well.
Painkiller , Holy Diver, Cold Sweat and Miracle Man Set
