Pickups for LP STD

I'm usually pretty derisive about modern Gibsons as I think their QC is often laughable, but I came across a Goldtop 08 STD today that I really, really like. So I bought it.

Now it needs new pickups I reckon. Though I'll have a couple rehearsals with it and record a bit before I change anything, to be sure.

It will be getting used in my crust/black/doom band. Akin to Darkthrone, Amebix, Doom, Black Sun, Corrupted and so on. (bet that was read with a chorus of "Who? :lol:" as well as more straightforward doom stuff, like Electric Wizard, Bongzilla, Sabbath, Sleep and stuff. Tuned to B. I currently have a riff raff in the bridge of a Edwards LPC and think it suits that stuff great but am kinda thinking a humbucker sized P90 might be fun? Or should I go the normal Sabbathy route of a Warpig?

Any opinions welcome and appreciated.

Haven't heard most of those bands, but if you're thinking p90 or warpig how about..........Pig-90?

I'm not sure to be able to help you as you know BKPs better than me... and as I do not know well the bands you mentionned  :lol:

But have you ever considered the BD ? I think it's a good alternative to the riff raff with more power and low grind in its voice. I think it's clear and tight enough for detuning too.

I seriously doubt that
the pig is brighter than the holy diver, for example

that's interesting. I don't know the pig... and I thought it was the darkest in the modern range. Thanks for the tip !

nfe: what other BKP have you had in what guitars, and how do they contrast with what you want?

I hate to break it to you, but QC at Gibson has always been hit-or-miss.

Some periods were better and others were worse (IMHO, now is a relatively "good" time), but even back in Elder Days, when Gibsons were handcrafted by actual unionized Sindari Elves, Gibson put out some product that made you go "WTF?"

I've had a nailbomb/cold sweat set in a Parker Fly Mojo, a C. Warpig/Warpig set in a fly classic, a warpig in a strat and a riff raff in a LPC.

I really like the riff raff in the same tuning in the LPC, but think it could be a bit more grunty. Albiet I'd like to avoid modern metal sounds, it's all about crustiness! But with plenty clarity.

I never really loved the nailbomb/coldsweat set in that guitar (all mahogany, maple top- but likely so thin as to make virtually no difference) but I've loved nailbombs in a basswood guitar I played one in.

Tim has suggested a Painkiller set, incidentally. Which surprised me. But that was his nod for clarity at that low a tuning.

Anyone got any last opinions? I' still unsure about the painkiller given most of the sounds I'm after are vastly more old school in flavour, but the clarity at low tunings is obviously a big plus.

After my experience last weekend, I think a VHII might suit you well. I wouldn't lightheartedly recommend it someone looking for classic tones, but on a downtuned Les Paul, it would surely fit the bill!
