I often think of giving up altogether, but that's a different matter.

To me, owning guitars and playing them are
almost two different things. I love guitars, love buying them and modifying them, but when it comes to actually
playing.... even after nearly 30 years I'm rubbish, I've never been focused/dedicated enough to learn anything properly. I've just picked up little bits and pieces in a totally chaotic fashion and I've often tried (or intended) to start all over again, but never got anywhere.
But even if I
totally stopped playing, I think I'd still buy guitars. :|
I guess the ideal thing would be to find a really good, inspiring teacher... if I could be bothered  . But maybe it would work for you?
Derek (Fourth Feline) did what you're considering - got rid of all his old gear (including a really nice '70s SG), bought a jazz guitar and amp, and basically started again from scratch. I think he's really glad he did, but maybe he'll find this thread and comment.
