anyone ever own or play an illegal gibson copy? either deliberatly or by accident?
I have come across one or two that i know to be fake and are priced as such, but ive never played one.
if the build qaulity is cool i might be tempted. anyone had any experience? does anyone think that knowingly picking up a copy like that is a bad thing??

Well I say buy a fake Gibson, snort some cocaine, play a gig, make some money and spend it on hookers and more blow...

i think, if its a decent guitar its fine. besides, downloading mp3s is blatantly the biggest way of supporting crime and death in the 3rd world

Fakes usually aren't made very well I don't think.

On the outside many, but tonally/on the inside, not so much.

fake or replica as long as someone is straight with what they are trying to get rid of, im fine.

im looking around at stuff to potentially replace my LTD (which feels a bit like a toy)
today i played a columbus les paul. but it was so battered that i didnt want to put the extra effort into making it work. rewiring, etc. new tuners... blah blah blah.
i actually have a tone pros bridge and some sperzels in chrome, but they don't retro fit stuff.

im looking at japanese les paul and so on.
found a grass roots by esp on ebay but i can't find a spec for it. the grass roots site says their standard custom style les paul things have alder or basswood bodies. i'd prefer mahogony. im thinking aloud!

yeah. no real way of telling what a fake/replica is made of unless you get stuck in with a screwdriver i guess and open that sucker up!

are you talking about those actual chinese fakes, where they have gibson on the headstock, or the japanese copies like tokai etc.?

I don't have any experience with the former, but the latter can be really good (and the higher models can go up to prices higher than the gibson custom shop).

ok. as i said, i don't know anything about the ones which say gibson. I'd be extremely wary, but if you can try one first, then you're going to know more than me.

MIJ copies generally are great, but the big problem, as i'm sure philly q will agree with (he's a fan of them too), is that there is a wide range of models with a wide range of prices, and (assuming you're going second-hand) it's not always obvious which is which. You don't want to be paying LS320 prices for an LS80, kind of thing (the model number is normally the price in thousands of yen, for tokais anyway).

To make it more confusing, they change the model numbers when the price goes up even though the guitar itself hasn't changed!

It's not too difficult finding info on the newer models, but if you're looking at old Grecos, Burnys and things like that it's pretty hard to determine if you're paying over the odds for a botton-of-the-range model.
