OK - I know I am an old fogie, but what the hell are you supposed to do with Twitter

I have so far avoided it, thinking that on top of emails, forums, myspace, facebook etc etc - is it something else that I have to look at just to survive, or is it just another work disraction/avoidance type thing.

Is it just random text messages from people who are bored or can it be genuinely useful

Somebody tell me the benefits please

I'm with you on this Jonathan!! What is it?

I have a myspace account, but I regard it as complete @rse and never go there. I've seen the missus's facebook account, and after my own myspace experience, I have decided it's really not worth the effort for me!

I have enough problems, being on three music-related forums, finding time to actually make music (or do my job!) - what can Twitter do for me folks??

Cool, now following.
There are 10 kinds of people who understand binary.
Those who do and those who do not.

it depends on the way you want to approach it, but i like twitter alot. you can keep up to date with your friends, favourite blogs, celebrities etc. Its a nice way to find out about interesting gigs and cool stuff online for example. In a way it is like a text, in terms of the length - but the information content is pretty different. For example your twitter Jonathan might read:

Got Will's Lion back from the paint shop, they did a great job
Trying out new fret dressing tool from stew mac, think it will be useful
BKP package arrived from Tim, the secret new Schenker pickup rocks!
The '58 V is going well, just got the vintage correct tailpiece in
Philly Q popped in with his Edwards, chatting Steel Panthers

I'd be interested in that.

edit:
(my twitter is gw3m if anyone is interested)

Just a bit of fun really. To be honest we've had so many people asking why we're not on Facebook, Twitter etc I though we ought to do something about it so I set some of the lads here onto it. I must admit I hadn't a clue what they were! We're so busy here I barely get time to look in on the forum let alone do 'social networking' whatever that is. Back in my day we all used to meet up, talk and have a good time................old fogey signing off :D.

I relunctantly joined this recently as a lot of my website customers want a twitter feed for their sites, but I have to say it's quite neat even if it is overhyped.
