rebel yell - which les paul?

well, i still have this rebel yell kicking around... i want to put it in a les paul, but i am in no rush at all. i notice some of the more low budget les pauls don't use the 'real' woods.. i'm not too proud to play such a guitar, bit it would be nice to have one sounding good with the rebel yell. here are some wood combinations i've seen for cheaper les pauls, would be good to know what is preferred for the rebel yell:

all mahogany
all mahogany body with maple neck
mahogany body and neck with alder top
mahogany body and neck with thin maple top (doubt if it affects the tone much)

of course mostly i'm thinking of vintage, agile and epiphone (plus maybe tokai, but i'm not impressed with their latest MIC instruments)

more expensive options would be edwards, or an all mahogany faded studio from gibson.

at least the edwards would have the proper woods.. i don't mind about the wrong woods though, if it will sound good.

buy a gibson studio body from gibsondependable on ebay
I've dealed with him a couple times and it's a great seller with a ton of good original gibson parts going for good prices and honest international shipping quotes (which is very rare)

I've never played an asian that sounds like honduran/brazilian mahogany
the asian mahogany species can sound pretty good, sometimes they're even more sustainy, but they lack the detailed and loud acoustic resonance
I have an old MIJ LP that I love and played others like Edwards, but they surely don't have that resonance (SOME gibsons also don't)

thanks for this interesting response eric... thats something to think about. you know, i sort of fancied a goldtop.

a friend of mine bought a new beatiful goldtop edwards for relatively cheap (about 500 pounds) while she was living in UK
it's a great guitar for sure, except for the the awful (gotoh?) tuners and the duncan 59n (urgh!)
the heaviest guitar I've seen

Eric, your friend is cute! Not enough women playing Les Pauls out there ...

For the OP: Buy a PRS Singlecut SE. Awesome guitar and the right woods and cheap. The gigbags they come with are the best!

Only downside to the PRS SE is the chunky neck, I'd try before you buy.

You might want to consider Ian Price's Signature that I used to own - this is cheap as chips and a superb LP!  £340 and made in Japan, you will NOT find better at the price.  It has all the right woods AND it's got Mules AND a hard case  :o

lookwise, its not really my cup of char, i reckon it would sit unplayed. the seller eric suggested has a blue flip/flop body which i could handle. seems like you all think its worth holding out for an instrument of the right woods..

nevertheless, how would rebel yell do in an all mahogany paul?

Yeah, one stunning beautiful goldtop, as you said,  8) but come on ! she doesn't seems to be as heavy as you seem to think !

yeah it has a very glossy nitro finish

that thing is over 5 kilos for sure
I had some really heavy les paul copies and played an even heavier gibson explorer, but that edwards is heavier than all of them (phisically heavier, not soundwise)
which also can make perfect sense, since some asian species, like the indian mahogany can weight over 800kg/m³, while the honduran mahogany weights about 540kg/m³
african mahogany can weight over 800 too

its true.. agile do an all mahogany goldtop though. i think the gibson ones are a bit of a ripoff, new anyway.

There is an Epi Gold top for sale for a stupid cheap price on Gumtree right now. I'm so tempted even though I have a very good Epi LP and i don't really like LPs that much. Still thinking about it though...

yes, i was hoping to get some answers on this thread, but it didn't work out so far, though got some other cool infos.. to restate the question again:

how will a rebel yell sound in:

mahogany/alder les paul (like epiphone)
mahogany/maple neck les paul (some agile)
all mahogany les paul (some agile)
mahogany/thin maple top les paul (vintage and agile)

I had a Rebel Yell bridge in an all-mahogany Gibson The Paul SL.  The guitar had a thinner body than a "real" LP, but it was fairly heavy and not particularly resonant - quite bright/thin sounding acoustically.

The RY sounded OK, certainly bright enough, but I found the mids somewhat harsh, almost a bit nasal.  Whether that was the guitar or the pickup, I don't know.
