Speakers??
« on: November 01, 2005, 11:26:45 AM »
I havent been on the forum in ages (busy at uni, band and work!!!) Was wondering if anyone would have any advice on speakers. Heres the deal:

My gear is... Gibson SG '61 reissue (need to save for Bareknuckles for this, ive only got it!!), Gibson Les Paul Classic (with Nailbombs)... but my main guitar will be the SG. My amp is an Engl Thunder 50 and i use only wah-wah occasionally (so no effects really). Im also playing this through a Marshall 1960B cab.

Ive just changed band, we will be going for a rock/doom feel, think Trouble, Danzig, Cathedral, Place of Skulls, COC, Sabbath etc etc... However i feel that the Marshall cab is just to bassy and modern sounding... my typical settings are Gain 3-4, Bass 4, Mid 6-7 and Treble 4 (bear in mind the Engl has a ton of high end!) I usually play with the Channel volume at 7 and the Master at 5.  Im thinking about changing the speakers, i have an old empty Marshall cab from the 70's which im going to use.... So does anyone know whether to go for  celestion greenbacks or celestion vintage 30's or something else... im just not sure whether greenbacks can handle what im throwing at them, as they are only 25w speakers!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated  :D

Four greenbacks should take the onslaught (4x25w=100w) The Vintage 30s may sound a bit too modern. Before putting the cash into speakers try and check out a Greenback loaded Marshall with you Engl, it could be the voicing on the amp as much as the speakers - best to check!

AFAIK the V30's have a bit more top end to them than the greenbacks

here's the webpage for the celestions.

Excellent stuff! More doom bands out there the better IMO! ;)

I prefer Vint 30's personally, now running 2 in my JCM800 combo, and I think it sounds great.

You could try a mix. It's a subject that's come up before on this forum. If your using a 2 x 12 or a 4 x 12 you have the opportunity to use say 1 or two V30's and one or two G12H's, or whatever. You can extend the range of the cab instead of committing to one particular speaker voicing. If cost is not a serious problem a Century/V30 mix is excellent.

Just a thought.

I dont want to hijack youre thread mate, but I have a quick question thats relevant to this, a quick answer is all thats needed.

I have a TSL602 I've been looking to change the speakers in for a while: I want to use greenbacks. My other two options are GH12s and V30s.

If I use one greenback @25W and one GH12 @ whatever (I dont remember: 75?) or V30@60 then am I still putting the greenback at risk? Is power evenly destributed or is it it only the sum of the powers that matters?

Impedance in multi-speaker applications is what determines power distribution; the simple answer is that speakers of the same impedance will share the load equally. It's more complicated than that but for for all intents and purposes you can ignore the variables.

P.S. to that last post. you still have to work on the basis that the lowest speaker rating applies to all of the speakers used. For instance if you use one rated at 30w and one at 75w you have to take the view that they're both rated at 30w 'cos if you drive the cab at 100w (assuming that 30+75 = 105) you'll overdrive the 30w speaker 'cos it's taking half of the output.

the current reissue Greenback isn't the greatest IMO, I would go for a set of G12H-30s - similar tone but with a tighter bass end and more poke overall. I've used these speakers for vintage rock stuff right upto full on metal (as in my current band).  The G12H-30s will do COC stuff spot on.

HJM, have to tried the Herritage G12H-30?, if so how does it compare to the 'standard' G12H-30?
