Engl Steve Morse - time for a second look?

Was searching around youtube when I found this demo

Listen to the gain sounds from 5:53 to 7:16  :eek: :twisted:

I know I posted an uncomplimentary review when I tried it.  Perhaps it might be worth a trip back to Wembley Guitar Centre with those settings on paper, take one of my own guitars & try it with a different cab...

No, I have an Engl Savage 120 which, combined with my "brutal" cab absolutely SLAYS :twisted: & covers most tonal needs I might have.

However, if I had gotten these sounds out of it when I tried it, I would almost certainly have bought it anyway.... :)

Is the Savage more money? I thought most if not all signature amps were modelled from the Savage.

No, cheaper by a few hundred.

IIRC they described the Blackmore as "modelled on Savage technology" (whatever that means :?) in their marketing.  But aside from being in the same sized chassis, I think the later Engls are quite different.

The Morse is a lot closer to the SE head (which Morse actually used before this sig model was released) & the Invader - all 3 have the MIDI switching which is a huge improvement on what the Savage has.

The thing I love most about my Savage is the "clean" power section that can reproduce my favourite tones at ANY volume & the murderously vicious high gain channel :twisted:

Yeah, that sounds pretty good.

I'm always amazed at how quiet modern amps sound when you're not playing them.  Mine sounds like the M25...

I tried it against the Invader 100 and preferred the Invader. Hi Mid and Low Mid on a gain channel seems useful, but to me it didn't sound right. Is always a matter of taste for sure. The Invader is nice though, different from other Engls I played.

The Morse sig may as well be a Boss MetalZone through a Gorilla. I mean... sure he's a great player but his tone has always been shite with the possible exception of Living Loud.

Mine gets quieter the louder you play.

Well, it buzzes at a constant volume and the amp its self doesn't make any noise besides that so the louder it is played the less you notice ;) .

That's the transformer, completely normal, it should not be very loud though.

You're right, the Blackmore head is based on the Savage, with a different power section and less tone shaping features. I own one; I wanted a head with a great basic tone for my tastes and I got it :)

Blackmore used the Savage head on the 'Stranger in us all' album. Great tone!
