« on: August 10, 2009, 01:22:11 PM »
what you guys think to guitar clinics, I just found one for Jeff Loomis in Manchester and it's only £3, travel will a bit more though

my experiences of clinics from youtube videos is bloke plays the riffs/leads/solos people know him for, answer some questions, sign some stuff

I'd like to go but I dunno if it's worth the faffing to get there and back

Think of it as a short, intimate gig rather than a seminar or lesson. They can be good fun but it does depend on the personality of the musician.

I saw Neil Brockelbank at a seminar and the experience was thus:

Neil came out and demoed his new signature Indie branded guitar.
He then went through a couple of things to do with melody and practice technique.
He threw it open to the crowd and answered their questions about playing.
He brought his band in and did a quite good set with his old Maverick branded signature model.
I too use chicken as a measurement.

Even if you only pick one thing up it's usually worth it when you consider the price of lessons.
The Sounds Great Clinics are usually good.
They were originally organised by someone I know in conjunction with his business and Sounds Great.
There was a legendary one with Vinnie Moore. When questions were opened out to the floor my mate asked him where he got his Brian May wigs from. :)

 Reminds me of my mate at the Motor Show in London years ago. He asked Clarkson why he had loads of pubes on his head

I've never attended one, but they seem like great idea - if only for the inspiration and "meet'n'greet" aspect .

I looked on somewhat enviously , when I saw that a music college in the London area played host to an 'open doors' Larry Carlton interactive guitar clinic  last year.

Great memories for your later years !

I have seen a few great clinics
Jennifer Batten - great showcase of her playing
Paul Gilbert - ditto
Yngwie Malmsteen - was a bit of a prima donna  - not so good
Tony Macalpine - awesome playing with his band
Billy Sheehan- awesome , great fun and worth the admission price for the rock stories and anecdotes he told
Bruce Kulick - so good I saw it twice and because Euro 96 was on - almost nobody turned up - was almost a 1 to1 session
Saw George Lynch do what amounted to a clinic as a gig- was good to see him play in a small room

I've been to a Guy Pratt clinic, which was brilliant, but that's because he's a really funny guy with loads of great stories, he barely touched a bass.

I wouldn't go to any guitar clinics that I can think of really. It's always guys who's playing I don't like that seem to do them.

Went to michael angelo a while back.
not at all informative, hardly did any q & a
but was still awesome, well worth the small cost for seeing a dude rock out stupid double guitar stuff and ramble on making hardly any sense.

Christ! I use to be taught by him. He lived in Hull & could play fast, but didn't really know that much theory, got it completely wrong in fact. Nice-ish guy, but was very wrapped up in himself.

Sorry for the thread hi-jack

He also sounds exactly like he looks; so much so that it took me completely off guard when I heard it.

I'm doing a 2 clinics tomorrow at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford - on basic guitar setup and understanding the neck.
It's for the summer school syllabus that they run each year
I also tend to do one for the full time students there as well at some point in the year

Have also done it for BIMM, Guitar Institute and the now closed Musicians Institute in Wapping.

I can talk for England but I do lose my voice after 4 hours in a row.

What do you do when that happens? Do you have Bob Dylan style cards at the ready?  :)
