that bridge pickup looks much closer to the bridge than on a 'normal' les paul.

i know that bridge pickup up position makes a noticeable difference to tone. wheres a good place for it? how big is the difference a few mm or cm make?

Yeah, because it was converted from P-90s to humbuckers, I believe.

I think the placing of the bridge pickup can probably make quite a big difference, thinking how thin and "plinky" it sounds if you pick the strings right near the saddles.

On my SG-X, because it only has one pickup Gibson have (rather cleverly, for them) set it a bit further away from the bridge.  I'd say the sound is a little fatter/rounder compared with an SG Special or Standard.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I think that on Jeff's the pickup ring has actually been filed so that he could get the string through the wraptail

How was the pickup placement on your Edwards replica?

Good question, I'd almost forgotten that guitar!

It was in the standard LP bridge HB position - which suited me fine really.
