Favourite guitar player
« on: August 20, 2009, 10:06:10 AM »
I thought this could be an interesting subject. Who's you favourite guitar player/players and why?

I guess most of us have a long list of names of players that we enjoy listening to, but I'll start of simple with only three  :D

Tom Morello: I'm really impressed with they way Morello can cut a simple but hyper efficient riff. RATM isn't exactly rocket science, but they just ROCK. Like Walther says in the Big Lebowski: "The beauty of the plan is the simplicity." I also admire Morello for being innovative soundwise. His whammy pedal and kill switch work is fantastic.

Mike Einziger: He may not be a virtuoso, but I find him creative and to me he doesn't really sound like any other guitar player. I love his versatility too. He goes from funk/fusion over pop, rock, to hard rock.

Uffe Steen: Here we're talking virtuoso! Makes me proud to be Dane. He mostly plays blues and jazz and he's just so outrighteous good. Plays left hand, but with the strings upside down. CRAZY!

Yeah, there have been a few threads like this before, but not for a while!  And it might be interesting to reply to this one without reading what we wrote before, to see how different we're feeling now! :D

Sometimes I could reel off long lists of players I like, but today I'm only going to say one:

Robin Trower.  Difficult to explain why.... his playing is just so powerful and emotional in a way that I don't hear from anyone else.  You can see it in his face, too, when he plays - nothing to do with technique, it's like he just picks up the guitar and it channels his soul!  And yet he seems a very quiet, reserved, totally non rock'n'roll person (maybe that's why I identify with him).  He's the guitar player I'd want to be.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

And lazy as I am, I didn't bother to check this even though it did cross my mind  :D

I think I'll have a look at the old thread.

Fear that my tastes remain reasonably constant , but I'll throw a few different ones in there

Matthias Jabs - the best guitar ist the Scorpions ever had
Michael Schenker - UFO and MSG stuff - when he is on form he is top notch
George Lynch  - still pushing the boundaries of his style but a tasty player
Brian May - watching old clips always remind me how amazing he was/is
Ace Frehley - especially on his solo projects away from Kiss - live he is great to see
Joe Perry - I can't get a grip on how he plays but he does it so well (and Brad Whitford is so underrated)
Billy Gibbons - cant undertand a word he says , but when he plays guitar - WOW!

Paul Chapman - lived too long in Schenker's shadow , but his UFo and Waysted work was ace
Satchel (Russ Parish) - shows that Steel Panther are about the music and not just the gags
Mick Mars - a lot better than he was ever given credit for - and how he coped with the back pain I'll never know
Tom Kiefer & Jeff Labarr - Cinderella had such a great guitar playing team
Punky Mendoza - (Heavy Pettin) - because he was always great fun on stage and a tasty player too
www.felineguitars.com - repairs & custom built
Great fretwork!

Well at the minute:

JJ Cale - Just something about the way he plays and the music, I love it.

The bloke out of the Black Keys - who's name completely escapes me now.  My type of mucis palyed in my type of way.

Not sure who to put in third, was listening to Ry Cooder the other day so maybe him at the minute.  I'm not a shredder type, fair enough it's very impressive but guitar is more than playing 300 notes a second, making people shut and and listen is far more important which I think the three above do very well.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

Always Frusciante for me. Very predicatable although BFG, SRV, Joe Bonamassa, Jimmy Page, Hendrix and Matt Schofield have spent a lot of time on my CD players this year.
I think I hate being indecisive.

Hmm.. I don't remember what I wrote, or if I even did, but I still like Paul Gilbert, Satch, Searle from Architects (woo!), Steve Morse, mostly all the virtuosists (is that a word?) and Ben Orum from All Shall Perish and just the various people in guitar shops, workers and customers alike who can dish out guitar licks like speaking a fluent language. God the envy, lol..

So there, from really famous to not then to the general public, I think that's a good enough answer.

Adrian Smith - Plays the perfect solo for every song (IMO) - Wasted Years, Man of Sorrows, Aces High, Paschendale etc

Alex Skolnick - Amazing techinque, Phrasing and note choice.

John Sykes -  because i can now convince the other guitarist in my band that pentatonics ARE metal!

I think, comparing to the other thread, I still appreciate that Zakk was the reason I started playing, but most of that influence has now gone. Jake E Lee and Steve Clark are firm favourites now.
Also going to have to have Sykes + Rush Parish too

Fredrik Thordendal!!!

the Meshuggah phase I'm going through will never end!!!

5 years ago when I didn't have a clue I'd be saying Alexi Laiho cos he's the first shred monkey I discovered and main influence for picking up a guitar
