Fredrik Thordendal!!!

Good choice! Not a band i listen to very much anymore, but i've always admired him as a guitarist. Reminds me a lot of Alan Holdsworth.

As for me, its gotta be Rory Gallagher, the tone, the mastery of that beaten up Strat and of course, the excellent playing and songwriting.

My all time favorite guitarist is Chris Degarmo, formerly of Queensryche. He encompassed a great many things I like in a great guitarist, wonderful technique, great songs and tastefull solos without too much of that widdly for the sake of it stuff. It's a shame he packed it all in, the rest of the band have hardly written or played anything worthwhile since.

Uffe Steen: Here we're talking virtuoso! Makes me proud to be Dane. He mostly plays blues and jazz and he's just so outrighteous good. Plays left hand, but with the strings upside down. CRAZY!
I believe my guitar teacher told me about him. They were in conservatory together, only back then he played clarinet.

Currently (and for quite a while) my favourite player is Shawn Lane. Then people like Gilbert, Holdsworth, Jason Becker, Guthrie Govan. The great thing about Shawn is that not only did he have a very diverse playing style (could do alternate picking as good as Morse, di Meola or Gilbert as well as Holdworth style legato) but also an extremely diverse compositional style. His career spans from classic rock (with the Willies) to jazz fusion (most of the Powers of Ten and Tri-tone Fascination albums) to classical (Powers of Ten Suite) and even Indian music (Personae, Temporal etc, Good People etc, Icon). I know of no one else who could do that as comfortably as he could.

When I find another guitarist who will-

change my strings
set-up my cables
fix my trem

then maybe i'll consider them my #2
Rise above the crowds
Wade through toxic clouds
Breach the outer sphere
The edge of all our fears

Surely the point of this thread is to name only one person? And your reasons why it is that player and none other.

That's why I haven't posted, what you guys have done is too easy :p

I'd almost definitely say Guthrie Govan, he's blown me away since I first saw his videos etc, the guy's the best I've ever seen by a wide margin, superb chops, superb musicality, and a lovely guy.

I choose Simon Neil from Biffy Clyro. The progression he's made as a guitarist is one of the main reasons. The band's first album was a simple affair guitar wise, the second was a little more off the beaten track, and the last two he has turned into a very technical player.

Throw in a long standing of odd time signatures and well crafted choruses makes him my favorite guitarist. Oh and he plays strats, played really high up on the strap, and still rocks like a mofo. Impeccable live and s a great frontman. I saw them the first time they headlined the Barrowlands in Glasgow, best gig of my life and he managed the biggest stage dive ever. No shite, he ended up from a running jump HALF WAY INTO THE AUDIENCE. Legend.
Mississippi Queens, Holydiver.
