NGD (rare JC flame maple body content) + family pics - no 56k
« on: August 26, 2009, 05:44:01 AM »
Hello all, im a long term lurker of these waters but rarely post.
over the uni mid-year break i worked waaaay too much and after textbooks were bought & car rego renewed i found myself with quite a nice cash surplus. Rather than spending my hard earnt bucks on appliances and furniture when my woman and I move out later this year, i had the bright idea of purchasing yet another guitar.
I decided i would track down an elusive ibanez JPM100P1 or 90thHAM as a collector's piece. Unfortunately i had little luck finding a mint example for a reasonable price. I did however find something else.

immediate family from left to right:
HBRG-1802S, JC-CM1 (now with BKP ceramic warpigs & irish tour), RGT320Q RBB (now with BKP ceramic warpigs), RG-ET sustainer zebrawood/mahogany custom body with rg1520 neck(now with a bkp painkiller in the bridge)

I must say, this guitar is not what i expected. It is about 99% mint which is unbelievable for a 13 year old guitar, most shop stock guitars would have more wear than this, it looks like its straight out of the factory.
Its not as heavy, nor as bright sounding as I thought it would be (the body is 2pc flamed maple). My other JC weighs about half a kilo more (5kg & 5.5kg respectively).
It sounds well balanced with incredible clarity and articulation, it just sings. The pickups were above my expectations (air norton & steve's special), I've heard the same combo in basswood and they didn't sound nearly as lively or as thick as they do in this. The guitar just sings and it sounds extremely tight. It has very smooth and rounded highs with the tightest lows I've ever heard. It's also extremely versatile, It can cover pretty much all bases. The neck carve is dead on the ibanez JPM series, it's a limited ibanez j-custom special by hoshino apparently. There is a similar model listed called an HRG1802. This one has a rosewood board, & coloured pickup bobbins but is otherwise the same. When i took the neck off to shim it, it had the model number written in the cavity, it is an HBRG-1802S. It's about the same level of quality as my other j-custom which is also a limited piece, one of 3 in that colour so im told.

anyway,
hope you enjoyed my post.
I must get back to playing this beast

Hm, I can see a pattern in your guitar taste

It's stunning they made the whole body out of flamed maple, as they could have just used that wood for tops and made like 10 guitars out of it. I never played a maple body guitar, isn't it very bright? What's the neck made of?

My Hamer Californian had a solid flame maple body too. It sounded great.

Awesome! You should put double purple pickups on this one!
Love that flamed!

hey dude,
the neck is 3pc maple with a rosewood board.
Tonally, it is on the bright side of the spectrum but more balanced and punchy than anything else, sort of like alder. It has extremely smooth highs and very tight lows and the note definition is just amazing. Even with the stock pickups (steve's special & air norton) it is the best sounding guitar for lead playing I've ever owned.
Apparently there are 2 species of maple - hard & soft. Hard maple or rock maple is what is most commonly used for necks and is snappier and more brittle sounding, bodies are generally made of soft maple.
