Should I Give Our My Bank Details?
« on: September 14, 2009, 09:40:45 PM »
Help, I need BKP collective intelligence support..

I don't believe a retailer needs my Account Number and Sort Code to refund a transaction.  PDT_046

If I paid on my Visa Debit card you can refund using that number only... Am I correct with that being the case?

I've had trouble recovering money from a trader and now they are asking for this information... I'm being scammed & bullshiteeted here aren't I?

Because I need my money it is SO tempting to just believe them and do mental gymnastics to rationalise a request for personal data..

It isn't right is it?

Please help me make the right decision and stay out of more traps.  PDT_033 PDT_040

They need exactly the same details as they do to put a transaction through in the first place.

So, Card number, start date, expiry date, issue number if there is one, security code off the back. If the transaction isn't being done in person, some banks/pdq cpompanies need the house number and postcode of where the card is registered.

Nothing else, ever.

Agree with nfe. The only time I have ever given my sort code and a/c number out is to one of the good people on this forum for paymentof something I was selling.

As nfe says retailers only need the long number, expiry date, start date, issue number and security code.
I'm having issues getting money back from a commission sale - nearly a month has gone by since the sale and no news so I sympathise with you.
I think I hate being indecisive.

THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!

I thought that it was dodgy...

They took my money via debit and now they are doing anything to not give it back...

I don't f**king trust them with my bank details when they should have my debit card details on file.

There is no excuse surely for asking me for more information just potential stalling and or fraud?

Is it an established, well known company? If so fraud isn't likely, but stalling because their sales are low and they don't want to have to put a minus figure into the till until they're on a good day for takings when it'll look better is entirely plausible.

I think it is disgusting that this company who has a "bricks and mortar" store are f**king me around like this.

I think a new thread is in order when this is resolved.

from working in customer service, if you pay with a visa debit and use it as a debit card, then a refund will be processed as cash back.  if a visa debit is used through the credit function, then all they need is the card to swipe and it should be credited back to your account.

I never use my debit card online. I always use a credit card for any purchase I make as it offers you much more protection if things go tits-up. If there's something wrong then the credit card company is jointly responsible with the retailer for the goods/services purchased. I believe this is covered under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act (CCA).

The charge-back you can do with a debit card is not law like the protection given by the CCA. You'll have to show that there's been a breach of contract as well I believe.

My first port of call would be to ring your debit card provider and ask to be put through to a supervisor as the 1st line numpties will generally be monkeys who can read a script and have no capability of independent thought. Discuss your issue with them and ask about a chargeback. If they wont do it for you, take it to the financial ombudsman.

I generally give people one chance to solve things and then if they don't I make it my priority to shitee on them from a great hight. I've found it's the only way to get things done.

Good luck with sorting it out.

If you want to take it that next step, have a chat with Citizens Advice and they should be able to point you in the right direction. I personally would to be honest if they are blatantly trying to rip you off. Some kind of ombudsman should be able to help.

100% correct info I have gained from Barclays personal backing.

They only need the long number on the card to issue a refund - THAT IS ALL!

Well I hope to get this resolved today, fingers crossed.

Thanks again guys.. I'll buy you a virtual round for your help so far :drink:
