Engl screamer head.
« on: September 14, 2009, 10:15:43 PM »
This is the current set up if anyone hasn't been on the website.

 3 x ECC 83 preamp tubes.

Master section:
V.L.S. (two different master volumes), 50 watts
(1 x ECC 83, 2 x 5881 power amp tubes)

It is a very good amp indeed and I am in no rush to change the tubes but has anyone had success with regards to making it a bit more metal sounding ( metallica, slayer).  At the moment it is an awesome amp for clean sounding and rock. I am also cr@p at describing what tone I want :).

Don't say buy a powerball either :P

Also some suggestions in general for when I do need to  change tubes. How often are you meant to change them again?. It still sounds pretty dam good so obviously not yet.

Cheers

You could stick an overdrive (not a distortion pedal, an overdrive) or boost infront of it and use it to push the preamp a bit harder. Youre perfectly welcome to bring your rig round my place a try a couple.

Also, I had some success when I had a screamer with an EQ in the loop (something I've never had anything but success with with with every amp I've had actually). I have a couple of those too.

Yeah sounds like a plan. Do you suggest any particular overdrive and indeed EQs. I would rather buy those and just try them here for ease. Unless you have some for sale of course ( reduced friend price haha).

My rig isn't as big as yours but big enough for the dam thing to stay put upstairs in my room where it is currently being dormant. I nearly broke my back carrying the orange cabinet on my own lol. I guess I need to pump some iron at the gym more !

I suppose I could part with one of my EQs. Maybe. I'm selling a seymour duncan twin tube mayhem, but its not really an OD pedal....not nearly as metal as it makes itself out to be...its sort of half way.

You can try em and see if you like em anyway.

for overdrives to metal it up, I'd say tubescreamer set to clean boost, as they have a mid hump in the EQ which helps give a tighter sound
