One thing tho, Philly, what's all this about "rabbits ... etc.... ducks" classified as pets? We eats them thangs round these parts

Yeah, but you don't catch them, christen them Muffy and Daffy, lovingly keep them in a petting zoo for a few months, then eat the poor little buggers.  :P

reading the story, it appears like they brought the lamb with the idea to slaughter it from the very beginning. i say go for it.. people should have objected before the lamb even came in to the school.

I haven't eaten meat for 16 years, although my personal reason was that the thought of pieces of decaying animal corpse passing through my digestive tract is somewhat unpleasant.

I believe that anyone can eat meat if they wish but they should know how it's produced and have some respect for the animals who give up their lives for this (I hope this isn't getting too preachy) so although I wouldn't eat the lamb myself I support anyone who wants a piece of Marcus.

Does that make me a hypocrite?

Anyway, how about a bit of barbecued dog? http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10591164

Yeah, but that doesn't mean it's straightforward when you reach the point of putting his little white head on the chopping block!  :P

My brother-in-law, who's a jack-of-all-trades type who'll have a go at anything - building, gardening, teaching, farming, you name it - bought a few lambs and kept them for a year with the intention of slaughtering them himself.  But even though he likes to make out he's a practical, unsentimental hardman, he bottled it and got someone else to do it.

(They didn't taste any better than supermarket lamb either!   )

aye, valid points Phil. it is a different matter when it comes down to it.. though its not like they are going to do the deed themselves.

So the issue is where the school have placed the Pet / Produce line.
I agree with Jonny about parents 'protecting' their children, when the children seem to want it.

Apparently I freaked out nursery children when I was little

Sounds good! I want it!!

And I totally want a Skippy's Pie!!! But I think I'll prefer it roasted or barbequed than in pie (don't like much sauce on the meat... here in Brazil, BBQ is meat and salt...)

I asked my 6 year old - she thought that it was a bit sick... OK about it being made into lamb chops just didn't get the thing about treating like a pet and then topping it...

Yeah, this is cool...

In general, "we" (not us as individuals, but the society we're part of) don't give the littlies enough credit for how intelligent and how much judgement they actually have... she's pretty much of the same opinion as most of us grown-ups debating it here :D

Flip side of this - we probably give many grown-ups too much credit!! (Not that I want kids running the world though, I wasn't allowed to, so why should they be!)
