Curious About Hand Care
« on: September 19, 2009, 03:22:31 AM »
Hey. I am a player from the states. I've been playing guitar for almost a decade, and I have a problem. When I play, the fingers on my left hand occasionally lock up on me and take a second to pop out of whatever posission they locked up in. My little and ring fingers are the worst. I do have incredibly long fingers. I'm starting to get worried about this getting worse and my performance as a guitarist compromised. Guitar is my life and I need to be the best I can be. Please any thoughts on how I can prevent this, or any thoughts on making my fingers more dexterous. I do well but always need improvement. Thanks

Don't worry too much. I get something similar and I would say rest your hand (if you are not gigging!) and leave it for a few minutes-maybe make your playing sessions shorter in duration. As Johnny said, cod liver oil for the joints is good and if I am at home I put my hands in warm , not hot, water for a short while but don't play as it softens the skin.At a giig it is more of an issue and I usually tell the guys to do a song that I don't have too much to do on to give my hand a break.

that happens to me a lot with my pinky. although, i don't recall it happening once i recently started doing better warmups before playing. more importantly, i did more warmups which focused on doing wide finger stretches. seems to help a good bit.

I've had joint issues my whole life... Particularly knees and hands. Tried everything and physiotherapy.

The best thing I've ever used is high strength Glucosmine Sulphate - no pain whatsoever now. Good luck.

The old peoples around here have a lot of cod liver oil and glucosmine suphate for joint issues. Seems to help them, may do you some good!

I've had joint issues my whole life...

Me too, but I light them up anyway

I have a problem with my index finger on my left hand which means that a lot of the time I can't even press down the top on a can of deodorant.  Sometimes I hit it on my steering wheel which hurts like a right bar-steward.

Can't see me able to be playing after I'm 50 or so, so I might take up slide  :D
Advice worth what you just paid for it.
