Suggestions For New Pickups
« on: November 07, 2005, 09:11:22 PM »
Hello, I'm hoping you can help me with some suggestions as to which humbuckers to use to replace the stock pickups in my OLP John Petrucci sig, which has a basswood body. I mainly play metal such as early Megadeth/Metallica/Slayer/Iron Maiden, new heavy metal such as Lamb Of God/Trivium, and shred guitar: Yngwie/Michael Angelo etc.

For a bridge humbucker I was thinking along the lines of getting a Warpig as from the reviews I have read it seems to fit my style perfectly.

The decision I am having trouble with is deciding on a neck pickup. I use the neck pickup for almost all lead that I play and I am looking for a warm sound with clarity for shred leads and will also need to be able to be similar to the output volume of the warpig. From other posts I have read on these forums the Miracle Man or The Mule seem to be popular choices but I was interested if anyone has some better suggestions. Thanks.

Mule or a VHII sounds about right.

i think a VHII or a mule would be way too low output to balance out. what you have described sounds like an Abraxas to me. Although i'm still not sure about the output of the abraxas weighing up to the likes of a warpig. you could just go for another warpig - warpigs seem to be great all rounders (based on what i've read in reviews)! it'd look right too, lol
LOVING the Mules!

As I understand it, a Miracle Man neck is very much like a Warpig neck anyway! If you're wanting a metal-themed neck pup to match a Warpig in the bridge, then a matching Warpig in the neck may well be the way to go.

The cold sweat neck is perfect - very clear for neck lead work, it's got that Vinnie Moore neck clarity thing going on.

OK, when are some of the "semi-released" prototypes gonna find their way onto the web pages with lovely new spec layouts?  I'm starting to lose track of how what is voiced! :)

I think a calibrated Miracle Man set would work better. A warpig is great for heavy chugging but a miracle man is great for the really fast stuff.

The Miracle man bridge and Cold sweat neck would work very well for the tones you are describing. The Cold sweat neck has almost a half c--ked wah effect, perfect for shredding!
