Caps for a Miracle Man?
« on: October 04, 2009, 03:59:21 AM »
I decided I'm going to change the pickups in my guitar to Bare Knuckles and Q-tuners changing from some Actives, I don't happen to have and caps in my guitar which i need, can anyone suggest the best caps to make these pickups sounding their best? :?

what guitar are you putting them in and what value pots are you going to use?
i thin, i have .022uF orange drops in my guitars. and 500K pots. i have a les paul custom and a LTD EC-1000.
i used to have Miracle Men in my LTD and i used the same caps before changing pups to Nailbombs.

I've tried several brands and found various subtleties;

I found orange drops to be an improvement over cheap caps with a fuller sound and an open high end when the Tone is on 10.
NOS Sprague Vitamin Qs are more sophisticated and with a smoother high end, NOS Russian Vitamin Qs are like the Spragues but with a high end closer to the Orange Drop.
Mallory 150s seem very warm and smooth. I have this in my RG550 with a Miracle Man set. I think it helps to fill out the sound that would otherwise be quite bright.

Of course YMMV.

If you're happy with the taper of them, and they work fine, then I'd leave them as they are.

Orange drops are a good cap option to start you off, then see how you like the sound of everything after that  :)

logarithmic or linear taper

audio taper is log i think. if i remeber right. i tend to get tham mixed up.
the human ear tends to prefer log pots because of how the ear works. you perceive a gentle volume increase.
with a linear pot the volume increase as you turn the pot sounds less natural to some people. i think it jumps up in volume really quick and then doesnt seem to change much if at all as you turn the pot.
