Got some cash to spend and I want some Bare Knuckles

Hi guys.

I'm new here.....  I'm lucky enough to have a bit of cash to play with with, and naturally I'm interested in getting my hand on some BKPs.

I'm intending to install them into my Gibson ES137, to replace the stock Gibson stuff.

I'm thinking I'd like a set of PG Blues, I love the 'out-of-phase' sound, and general vintage vibe, but I'm interested in your opinions on wether they'd work in a semi-hollow.   Will I still be able to get the decent drivey sounds when in just the bridge or neck positions.

I mainly play through a Marshall 50W Plexi clone that I built, though I've also just re-furb'd a 70's silverface Fender Bassman.
Apart from the fact that they are wired permanently out of phase, are they more or less the same as one of the other BK pickups Stormy Mondays for example?, or are they an entirely new voicing?

A mate of mine has a Riff Raff and a Mule in his LP and they sound great.

Hi Jim, welcome to the forum  :)

Not sure about the ES137 but I have PG Blues in my LP std and they are great. AFAIK the bridge pickup is similar to a Stormy Monday but the neck is different as it's wound with Formvar. This produces a more  strat-like tone, more 'air' (for want of a better phrase). On clean settings it has an almost acoustic sound, unusual for a humbucker. The in-between sound is pure Peter Green.

Mississippi Queen, AIV Stormy Monday and Riff Raff seem to be the most commonly recommended pickups for semis on the forum.

Hey Nando, yeah it's me.
I've been think for ages about getting bk's and I've got some cash now, so I thought I might treat myself. I can't afford a full on warmoth build, but I reckon I can afford to upgrade the dull pickups in my Gibson.

What do you think? Will PGBlues work for me?

Sorry, I can't help on this one... I have NO experience with hollow body guitars nor the PG... I guess that they wouldn't have problem and would be in the same league as Stormy Mondays - low output vintage tone - is that what you're looking for?
Have you called/emailed Mr Tim Mills? He is very helpfull to people calling/sending email to him... I say it because the PG is a "new" pickup from BKP and few people have tested it, so I don't think most of us will be able to reaaaaally help you more than Plexi Ken already had...

About the Riff Raffs he said, I've listened to this clip of a 335 with it and it sounds damn good!!!

Change of plan....... I got my Les Paul out this weekend, and found that my Bridge Duncan JB is now kaput.  I'm gonna replace it with a Rebel Yell (with the 'Ray Gun' logo)

So here's my Rebel Yell in the Epi LP. ALong with a Riff Raff I swapped for a pair of Seymour Duncans.

Really happy with the combination.
This guitar came alive for me again.

I put MQ's in my ES137 classic. Great pickups, far better then the stock 490r/498t pups. They really can bring out the acoustic sound of this guitar but also are very responsive to the tone controls and touch. Given some drive they have awsome bite.

They work great as a matched pair because there is lots of variation in tones from neck to bridge and with both pickups. They are also very well balanced tonally and it really is night and day between the stock pups and the MQ's, not an ounce of mud.

The guitar keeps it's original traits but with far better voicing than before, id reccomend these pups with this guitar, it's a great combination.

I got a set of MQs in my Reverend Manta Ray which is much like a Gibson 137 and they sound superb. I find the MQs very versatile and they can give you a lot of different tones.
