Pickup Suggestions
« on: October 13, 2009, 12:27:01 PM »
Hello, for my first post I present you with yet another "suggest me some pickups" thread. Thinking of doing a swap and Bare Knuckles always come out with good reviews.

I'm looking for a good rock and metal humbucker (at the moment just for the bridge, but neck suggestions are welcome for later) that has some good cleans and can work with a coil split. The kinds of sounds I want to be able to cover are Velvet Revolver, Muse, Coheed and Cambria, Dream Theater, Opeth, Metallica, Tool and occasionally getting into Slayer and Sepultura territory.

The guitar I'm using is a Cort X-11: stock H-S-H pickups; basswood body with maple top; bolt-on maple neck; rosewood fretboard; Floyd Rose style trem and locking nut.

My amp is an Engl Screamer 50 combo.

Thanks in advance.

Hello & welcome to the forum.

Nailbomb ticks all those boxes IMHO.  I'd give serious thought to getting a calibrated set or a Cold Sweat neck to go with it - you'll save a few pounds over getting a neck pickup later & trust me, once you've gone BKP, you'll wonder how you managed without :)
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

I was thinking of the Nailbomb, but could only go by the product description. Would that work well with the basswood/maple guitar and the Engl (pretty bright amp)? Also, do pickup covers affect the sound much or are they just for looks?

Reading your description I was thinking an hot alnico V of the modern range would do the trick i.e. : Holydiver, Nailbomb.
(the slayer- sepultura things might push the Crawler to its limits, while the Pig might not be necessary for the other stuff you mentioned... But you still can have a look !)

With a bolt on maple neck + floyd I was more thinking HD over the NB, but if ANtag who knows them both VERY well says nailbomb, then trust him !

And welcome ! :good:

Thanks guys, a Nailbomb for the bridge is on my shopping list now...probably get a Cold Sweat or the calibrated set so I've got a nice neck pickup to.

Any word on the covers though? I was thinking the ram/aged nickle covers might look good on my guitar, but would they affect the sound? And if so, how?
