Dog lovers

My dog was put to sleep today while I was at work. She was a 14 year old Spaniel and had alot of problems and she possibly had a stroke of some sort recently. You could see in her eyes that there was something wrong. Even though I knew she would be going today, the shock of not seeing her waiting for me at the front door from work really hurt. It's like losing a best friend.

Any one else had something similar?

My commiserations to you. I've had it with cats, but not a dog yet.

Gutted for you Steve  :(

We had a cat with a serious heart issue that ended up struggling to breathe.  After a couple of ops, some time in an oxygen chamber, and everyone at the vet hospital falling completely in love with him, we had to have him put to sleep.  Mrs Twinfan went to say goodbye to him while they did it, but I couldn't - I had to stay in the car.  He was very much my cat, and I still miss him now.

I know exactly how you're feeling.

never had to put anything to sleep, but our cat was hit by a car when i was about 15. We'd only had it for about 3 months, and I was gutted, I can only imagine how sad you'd be if you'd had a cat or dog for years... :( Sorry to hear your sad story.

Its not nice losing old pets, always seem closer to them as they have seen so much of your life too.

I was walking home from work once and my brother came to meet me - the only time that ever happened - because our dog had died.  That was horrible.  I still have dreams in which that little dog's alive and well, even though she died 20 years ago.

I also had to have my cat put to sleep.  I had a bad cold at the time and was constantly blowing my nose, the vet must've thought I was an emotional wreck.  I did cry for real when I got home.

I don't know if this is much consolation - or just sounds weird - but when a pet dies the memories are nearly all good ones.  When a person dies you remember the bad times as well as the good, the times you argued or were horrible to each other.  It's much more difficult and complicated to come to terms with.

I sympathise. I have had to take two cats to the vet -both made it to very old age. I have had a dog die and a couple of cats killed by cars. It is always painful and all you can do is feel the pain and grieve because you will get through it. I think that you can be proud of the fact that you gave an animal a home, food and most importantly love. I expect if you could ask your dog for an assessment of her life she would have said that it was great. She lived to about the best age you can expect.I promise it will get better, I know I have been where you are right now often enough.

I think it's been 6 months since my cat passed away and I still see it around the house, which then turns out to be a pile of washing or something

Condolences-We lost our last dog, Basil, a week before our wedding. He was old and we knew the time would come sooner or later. Even so, it was a real shock when he went.

It will sound stupid to none pet owners, but it took forever to get over and I told the wife that we would never have another dog, because i didn't want to go through it again. The house just didn't feel the same without one, so we got Indy who is now my best buddy(apart from when he's being a little bugger!!)

Sorry to hear that :( It's a horrible feeling not having a dog around. Even being at uni I hate not having my dog here (I know its not the same as losing one but still)!

Very, very sad. We have 2 dogs (spaniel and a beagle) and 4 cats (2 maine coons and 2 moggies). It's tough losing a pet - we've had 2 cats put to sleep in the last few years. One of them was only 2 years old and had major kidney malfunction.

It does get easier with time but little things every now and then remind you of them.
I think I hate being indecisive.
