Stupid question: NB HD difference
« on: October 20, 2009, 11:11:01 PM »
So stupid question: what is the difference between the Nailbomb and the Holy Diver? I was just looking at the pickup list and they are both Alnico V, they are both contemporary, bith have "punchy" in the description and the DC resistance is really close (16,2 vs. 16).

Which one "screams" more on leads, which one has that vowel-like midrange on solos?
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

I own only the NB, but I've heard clips and read many descriptions.

HD is slightly hotter, has more midrange and is warmer in tone. Both are excellent for playing lead, just depends on the guitar, amp and one's preferences. With the mids it has, I'd say the HD can't NOT sing :)

This has been discussed before, try this or this (I'm sure there are a few others, have a dig around with the Search...) :)
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

Ok, now I know that the HD sounds fatter and bigger and the NB clearer with an upper mid cut. I still don't know really which one has more of that aggressive harmonic high end. I've listened to some clips, it seems to be the HD has more the Arch Enemy lead sound I'm after.

Nailbombs. With A5 mags.

Hear this clip I did with the NB7s. That climatic stretch at the back is the bridge pup of the Nbs.

I like the holy diver bette for most stuff
the nailbomb is louder and tighter for rhythms, but the diver is middier, fatter, more fluid, has louder pinch harmonics, sounds more open on chords
the nailbomb is brighter and has more upper cut (tigeeerrr! http://www.fightersgeneration.com/characters3/sagat-ttigergenocide.gif), but not really more upper mids
it's more like a darker and smoother alnico version of the cold sweat
for leads I'd definitely pick a holy diver over ANYTHING
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat
