if they're banned from open debate they have their righteous indignation and can rant to each other all the more about how they are being marginalised in their own country.

i agree with this. i think this is a major issue. making people already distant from current politicians etc... feel like they should band together even more because those people are trying to suppress their views.

(EDIT: i just read this back and i realised id pidgeon holed the right wing voter a bit too much.)

I also however... think that the debate needs bringing out because certain things done out of none racially biased patriotism (for example) can be labelled as such.
I was talking about this with the missus. shes from the area of leeds with the highest voting BNP numbers. She told how at the british library, some people came to work with st george's cross lapel pins on on the morning of st george's day., not people who are right wing crazies, but people who want to embrace their heritage. they were told to remove them by management.

that kind of thing is as damaging as not allowing the BNP to speak.

p.s. I think St George's Day, Morris Dancing and Folk Music is awesome. that doesn't make me a racist nazi.

Perhaps the saddest and most damaging aspect of any extremist influence in the U.K.  is the way in which the action / reaction threatens to remove the ability for us to live in a sane balance. The 'Politically incorrect'  giving rise to a whole equal and opposite flavour of unworkable 'Politically correct'. A thorny issue indeed.

seriously though... for ages, i felt that the welsh, and scottish and irish have these really interesting surviving traditions  and so on. like Gaelic Football and so on. I really didnt know what my history was, I don't speak a more ancient language than English.

I once went to a beer festival by the canal near where i lived, and they had EVIL looking morris dancers. sounds crazy, but it was pretty cool. also, the Folk Proms the BBC did was really very interesting.

i watched this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMhYho7trGs

you cant deny thats good.

since then i found out about Lancashire Catch Wrestling, which dates back before the Roman empire.
I think small things like that are amazing. maybe its just me. I'd rather find those things interesting than try my best to be american or from anywhere else. not that i hate americans, im just not american.

its just sad that if i was to say im interested in english traditions, that some people may assume i vote for the BNP.

i hope that makes sense

Well put

I dislike BNP/ National Front politics and hatred but I am also sick of the fact that we cant have a SENSIBLE discussion on Immigration and border controls and who is eligible for the UKs benefits /NHS/ whatever without being branded a rascist by the right on brigade.

If you visit America their passport control and border security are pretty harsh even to holiday makers whilst I feel we dont take enough adequate/appropriate measures in this country.

By all means let Griffin on and surely he will show himself up for the bigot that he is

But let proper discussion of the issues be had also without branding anyone who raises "awkward" questions as a BNP fanatic or fascist (which is just a lazy and convenient, but unfair way of dismissing a valid argument)

Jonathon - good point - IMHO, one of the reasons that the BNP is attracting a share of the vote is because none of the other parties will have a sensible debate around those issues. They are running scared of the 'racist' card and therefore bury their heads  - surely it would be better to actually tackle and debate these issues in the open, rather than adopt the 'ostrich postition' and then cry 'foul!' (or should that be 'fowl!' ??) when the BNP actually win seats??

Morris Dancing is cool, even if half of it really dates back only to the late 19th century folk revival - although Dmoney there's little morris dancing going on in New Cross!

Along with Lancashire Catch Wrestling one should not forget the Victorian martial art of Bartjitsu - how to smack ruffians with an umbrella!

personally, i think this dudes rubbish needs a debate so that people can see the idiotic flaws in his policies.

+1, I don't see how you can ban people from saying stuff while still having freedom of speech, and with any luck if you give them enough rope they'll just hang themselves anyway. if their policies are as idiotic as everyone thinks (and they are), it shouldn't be too hard to defeat them in a debate, kind of thing.

I'm from Burscough. I've lived in london for a few years now.
The morris dancing and beer festival used to be at The Ship Inn (aka The Blood Tub) in Lathom by that stretch of the Leed to Liverpools canal.

Bartitsu looks good. haha. there is also a guy teaching catch wrestling in wales.
