Which BKP in my Semi Acoustic? Think Rush - Guns n Roses.
« on: October 28, 2009, 10:19:51 AM »
Hey all.

I want some new pickups and electronics in my Washburn HB-35. the guitar itself is great, looks great, nice weight, amazing neck, but I don't like the pikcups and electronics.

I bought it to play Rush on, so I'm after some pickups that will give me that classic late 70s Rush sound. BUT, I don't want them to be overwhelmed when I turn up the gain.

They have to have gold covers.

Any suggestions?

EDIT - Here's the spec: Click

Welcome - great username! :D

I'd be thinking about Riff Raffs to do that job. I've not got a semi myself, but I believe the RRs get recommended for them.

I suggest the RRs because they are great for that 70s rock tone.

Would they be hot enough to do more modern hard rock? I mean I know a lot is on the amp, but I was thinking maybe a choice from the Vintage Hot section? Black Dogs?

They handle all the gain that I chuck at them - but I don't play in a band anymore (so I don't know how well the more distorted sounds I meddle with in the living room would cut through), and I only go as far as, say, mid-80s Judas Priest for gain anyway

From what I've read on here, I have feeling you don't need to go vintage hot, especially not in a semi - but you'll need others with more direct experience...

One thing I have thought since first posting - how bright sounding is your semi? I used to have quite a mellow sounding one years ago - RRs would have been absolutely perfect for me in that one. But I tried a Gibson a while back that had quite a hard/bright accoustic tone, I didn't buy it anyway, but RRs might have sounded a little bright in that one for my tastes.

I don't have any other semi to compare it to really. It's all maple I think, so it must be pretty bright
