Q: Is there any advantage to using solder with a 2% silver content?
A: Yes. Silver solder keeps werewolves away from your amp.

i think i should get an Aiken amp, i do, after all, live in the sticks...

Actually any amp made after introduction of RoHS (July 2006) will almost certainly be using solder with a significant silver content, so you should be safe with any hew amp!!

That reminds me, I should stock up on some 60/40 solder before the price becomes silly.  I've got a decent stock of Ersin Multicore, but it'll always come in handy.

For your information I have now got hold of a copy of the Lee Jackson's and Merlin Blencowe's books.

The Lee Jackson book is pretty useless to be honest. In fact it's hard to say anything positive about it.

In contrast the Merlin Blencowe's is top notch. Probably the best book on guitar pre-amps I've seen, with a load of info not found anywhere else. I would warn any prospective buyers that it is not for beginners, and has plenty of equations in it. Nevertheless, even if you aren't into the maths then you will find some very useful circuits/ ideas in here.

not surprised that Merlin's book is good - his website is spot on.
