OK I've got a question, I'm using a 4 x 12" with 2 V30's & 2 GT1275's from a MJW Bassman, but I think (as so do other people) that there's a little too much bass in there & want to lighten the bass a little but keep the nice lovely overall tone. I've been chatting with Frank about some M's, would this work with GT's?

Neither 75s of V30s have a lot of bass, it'll be the cab and the amp giving you the low end.

I would keep the speakers and run the amp with the bass at zero.

The Eminence Black Powder is very tight on the low end. Replacing the 75s with two of those could work really well for you, especially if you're going for a metal tone.

I think it is the bass that is the problem, bass is rolled to nearly off, but the bass & mid range are not very articulate. Would like to have the definition when I play. I mostly play rock, blues but every now & then play heavy rock is that helps

That'll be the source of the 'extra' bass then.  They're chunky cabs with tonnes of low end.

You're playing a bass amp through a bass cab  ;)

What pedal are you using Gary? I'm assuming you're not just cranking the amp to get a heavy rock sound?   :?
(When you were buying the amp, we were looking mainly at the quality of the cleans, hence the 5F6. Clearly, there are better amps for heavy rock, but the Bassman should be a fine pedal platform for any genre.)

Your speaker pairing of G12T-75 and V30 immediately says "harsh top end except when well cranked" to me, and certainly not excessive bass, as has been said. Neither are my favourite speakers, and certainly not for blues/classic rock. The G12M would be better, especially in view of the slightly scooped Fendery amp.

If you are winding the amp up, turn the bass right down (to zero)as it seems you are doing, but note that if you're using 'buckers with a bassy pedal, this might not be enough. There are loads of mods you can do to the amp (as I think we talked about at the time), from cutting the bass a little, up to the point where it becomes a Marshall Plexi or 2204!

I'm afraid though that you can't have something for nothing. Those sweet, warm cleans, and bluesy breakup will suffer if you want a harder, tighter bottom end.

I think 75s can be nice for heavy tones up close, but if you walk off stage into the public area, they seem to sound very fizzy.

I like combinations with G12H30s. Greenback/12H30 or V30/H30.

Try the bassman with a 4x10 or 2x10 if you can.  Best to try different cabs before you start swapping speakers.

Or you could try an eq pedal to cut some of the low / low mid.....

just finished night shifts, and its the first time ive been able to give my CL80 + V30 mix 4x12 an a blast.
only got to 2 on the avenger.

sounds real smooth up close, a bit more mid focussed if i stand a few meters away.
tried to back off the mids to make it sound a little less harsh, and i went to far and lost some definition.
turned it back up and its cool. they still need to get broken in a guess. but i like it so far.

Eminence Tonespotter

all day everyday for your requirements young padawan, and trust me i've tried EVERY single Celestion and Eminence and Jensen over the years even the Pre-Rola celestions which cost me a fortune.

and the Eminence Tonespotter gives the nicest warm fat mids tone with plenty of mids and a great high without being piercing..
