A short orchestral piece

This is a podcast theme I did for someone; the basic idea was already written, I re-arranged for orchestra.

What software do you use for the instruments? Sounds really good :)

Thanks!

I do the orchestration in Cubase (either step writing or using an Oxygen keyboard controller). The samples are EastWest Symphonic Orchestra. If you're looking to do pads or quick-n-dirty style sting parts, this is not the plugin to own; this is straight up orchestration, so you need to score each instrument individually. It took about 3 hours of experimentation, believe it or not, to score that little piece, because once you decide which instrument is going to be playing which part you still need to work out the actual harmonies.

I really enjoy doing little orchestral bits, though. It really exercises your composition skills!

It was just getting going, and I was leaning back, closing my eyes... and it finished!

Really effective - I couldn't have said with any certainty that it wasn't an actual orchestra.

I'm kind of interested in getting into this way of doing things - the quick and dirty method of adding "strings" or "horns" parts just doesn't quite do it for me, it always sounds like "keyboards". I want a horn section, or "real" strings... I'd reached the conclusion that you must able to do it with keyboards and samples, but that you'd have to score or play the parts individually - and that's as far as I'd got before deciding that it was a lot of work to be done "one day"...

Hearing this has been quite encouraging! :D

Interesting and well worth developing into a full piece.

What a fine little piece of work. I was instantly thinking that it would be great for a pirate movie. Aaargghhhh! Ye scurvy dogs!
