Pickups recommendations for a Custom Built guitar.
« on: November 16, 2009, 05:32:50 PM »
Hello all, I'm new to this forum, this is my very first post and I need some help.
I sent an email to info@BKP, but this looks like THE place to ask.

I am an amateur builder, and am just finishing a guitar for a customer.
The guitar in question is a single cut solid-body in Korina, with a korina set-neck and a rosewood 22 frets board, scale 25".
The body is thinner than a LP (36mm) with a 16mm maple top. The bridge is an aluminum wraparound.
It is built for a neck P90 soap-bar and a bridge humbucker (LP BFG configuration), with independent volume and tone controls and a 3-way toggle.

Sound-wise, the specifications I got from my customer are the following:

>>>
I'm not too much about uber bright guitars...

1. I love sweet mids. Even though I'm a hard rock and metal kinda guy, I never liked those scooped sounds w/o any mids. My heavy distortion sound are kinda Santana-esque, just a bit more distorted.

2. I love the open, articulated and a bit "nosy" sound of p90 pickups. That's one of the main reasons I wanted the "BFG" pickup setup.

3. I need a hot bridge pickup. Basically, I hope to get the punch out of the humbucker, while as the p90 adds to the overall articulation.

Given these requirements and the instrument they'll go in, which BK pickups would you suggest ??

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Hello & welcome.

IMHO, the Holy Diver will sound absolutely HUGE in that guitar :)  Ticks all the boxes in 1. & 3. of your customer's requirements & actually works quite well with Korina.

If by "hot" your customer actually means "a little bit hotter than vintage" rather than "metal hot", then Crawler might be an alternative.

Can't really help with the neck pickup as I haven't tried any of the P90s, but reading the descriptions on the Product page, I'd go with a BKP-91 neck.
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

Can't tell how the Crawler bridge would sound on a korina guitar (now IIRC, korina is a bit brighter than mahogany ? please someone correct me if I'm wrong), but on my all-maple going-thru-neck Vox Custom 24, it has a LOT of bites (very bight&tight guitar so I actually ended up using a 0.033uF cap on this pup instead of the "standard" 0.002uF) and punch, and yet very warms and singing mids - and is already very articulate by itself. A very rock'n'roll pup, fullfils all mu needs from classic rock to old-time hard-rock to almost hard-core, heavy distortion stuff.
