Replacing Rebel Yells with... ?
« on: November 18, 2009, 01:30:02 PM »
Hello,

i got a calibrated Rebel Yell Set for about 1 1/2 years now, and i always found the Rebel Yell Pickups great organic sounding, but  probably a bit too bassy on heavy rhythmn parts, so i´m in search for a pickups combination to replace them.

Last week, i got a used Warpig, i replaced the bridge pickup, the warpig offers nearly the same bass response as the Rebel Yell, but sounded more compressed and tigther, but much less organic.. its indeed a nice pickup too, but defintly not what i´m searching for.

so now i´m quite unsure which one to get?
Abraxas? Miracle Men? Cold-Sweet, or Mules???

Basically, what i want is just Rebel Yells with less bass and more highs.. organic sounding is very important, the pickup doesnt need to be "uber-tight and compressed)

The guitar has a cedro body, maple top, maple neck.

any advice is very appreciated
cheers

How about VHIIs?  They're a bit "lighter" sounding I think?

I'm quite surprised you find the Rebel Yells (or the bridge, at least) too bassy.  Of the BKP humbuckers I've owned, I'd say it was probably the least bassy.

Dave could be right with VHIIs, I have one but haven't tried it yet.  Or Riff Raffs maybe?
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Hi,

I'm surprised too that you find the RY bassy..and that you find the warpig LESS bassy than the RY! Maybe it's some specific frequency that both the guitar and the RY have on abundance of in the low end.

The RY is pretty aggressive in the mids..I think it's time to give Tim an e-mail, maybe he could do a little rewinding?

I feel the same way about the RY in my McCarty. I think it works well with Marshall style amps, but not so well with more modern voiced styles.

VHIIs might be a bit too bright/classic rock - they do work well with Metal too but won't give you those mean downtuned squeals due to a bit lacking in the lower regions.

I was thinking to get some Mules for the McCarty, as they are said to be very balanced and good for any style, but I haven't owned them yet.

thanks for your replys and your suggestion about the VHII and Riff Raff

Philly Q, you had the Abraxas right? what do you think about them compared to the Rebel Yells?

i also talked to tim, but i dont want to "destroy" the great calibrated rebel yell set i got. so basically i want to replace the set with a different calibrated set that just sounds a bit less bassy, but still that organic

and i want to be able to come back to the original pickup set if i would like to someday.

sorry if didnt said correct, i dont think the warpig is less bassy then the ry, i find both very similar in terms of bass, but the overal tonality and response is very different

btw, my amp is a mesa boogie rkII, so indeed a modern voiced amp
our Tuning is Eb, and we are doing (Modern) Hard-Rock.. not metal and not extremly fast palm-muted riffs.

I had a Rebel Yell bridge and Abraxas neck in the same guitar, so I can't compare I'm afraid!

From all I've read, I'm sure the Abraxas bridge will be warmer and more vintage-sounding than the RY.  I don't know if it'll have more bass, but it'll certainly be softer in the bass.

hmmm...sounds like you want a tighter tone in the bass?I like my Nailbombs for that tone...I am talking LPaul w/ ebony board vs. LP with rosewood(it has the Rebs)-the LP Custom/NB is tighter, but still alive and organic-hope this doesnt add to your confusion :(

thanks :)
thats a forge embrace, forge is now called frank hartung guitars:
http://www.hartung-guitars.com/en/

this morning, it took out the warpig, and put back in the rebel yell, but i unconnected the tone pot, and there was also a capacitor on the volume pot, i took that out too.
so the wiring is: pickup - vol - 3way - out, and the tone is much much clearer as before.. so it seems to me that one of these components screwed up that tone and removed the whole clarity.

so i dont think there is a need to replace the rebel yell now, but many thanks for all your advices.

cheers
