Colour codes for Sea Foam Green??
« on: November 19, 2009, 10:33:41 PM »
I'm pretty much GAS'ed out... I don't want to buy any more guitars...

BUT.....

I want a Sea Foam Green tele or strat body to build a project around so much it hurts.... Time is not important but cost is so I don't want to order from Warmoth but buy to a budget locally.

  • Does anybody know where I can find this colour in the UK?
  • Does anybody know where I can get this colour mixed accurately in the UK?

I'd buy the paint and spray it or get it sprayed myself but it has to be accurate and vivid like the first picture below.

The second group picture shows the range of what passes for Sea Foam Green but I think the Fender originals "pop out" with that unique blue/green that is SO special.

HELP!!  :? :(

Do yourself a favour Dave - get yourself a good one from this guy in the US.  The complete guitar, minus pickups and electrics, is $799.  Bargain!  :o

that is a bargain, i was browsing the MJT stuff myself the other day and became quite tempted.  The relicing is at least as good as fender's top stuff

my sprayer is currently on a personal mission to be able to provide accurate fender custom colours.  Obviously its an issue of much contriversy because finished age, change, and are often diffierent depending on the mix of the day.  the colour codes are only the beginning

but he has been doing his research and hopes to offer accurate repro colours, he doesnt believe the manc guitar tech ones are close enough.   personally i go for whatever the customer wants and always ask them for an example when they ask for a fender custom colour so i can see what they mean

anyway, might be worth giving him an email to see where he is with sea foam green and what he can offer

I don't know if this is more accurate than anyone else's info, but it might be interesting if you haven't seen it:

Thanks guys...

I've found this which is a very interesting (long) in depth article on the whole subject of Fender Custom Colours

http://www.provide.net/~cfh/fenderc.html

My search seems to be pulling me down a deep and very interesting rabbit hole!!

I think this could get both very obsessive and expensive VERY quickly.

It's an interesting quest, but isn't it likely that the original vintage Fender colours would have varied a bit anyway from batch to batch?  And of course they've aged, so none of us have seen them as they looked when new.

How do you decide exactly what colour you want?

yeah, i use that quite often to establish what people mean by a certain colour.  The only thing thats important to me is that people get the colour they expect, that is more important to me than vintage accuracy or what the bloody name of the colour is.   A good sprayer will then colour match exactly

daphne blue can be even more fun!!

Oh that strat! I've made a small sex wee in my pants...

But to be pedantic, I think the group contains guitars in Sea Foam and possibly Surf green

Another of the pleasures of old guitar finishes is that they varied a lot, even two guitars of the same model and year, both fresh from the factory.

In part this was because a company such as Fender would acquire paint from different sources. Fender also used different painting techniques, depending on what the production schedule was and the person shooting the paint. Also, production standards then were different.

Then let the guitar sit in a case for decades or be played every night in a steamy, smoky Florida redneck bar and two 1960 Fender Telecasters can both have original blonde finishes that look very different.

Here's an American order page for Duco 2253 'Sea Foam' Green

http://www.paintscratch.com/cgi-bin/makepaint2.cgi

and here's a link to the UK supplier of Surf Green that Wez was talking about - Maybe they are not super accurate, but they maybe able to help:
