The DVLA now have camera cars to nick you if you have no tax - I drove straight past one this morning. The insurance certificate has now come through so I will get my tax tomorrow.

Was fbloke an idiot for driving without a tax disk, yes. Was there any malice behind his act, I doubt it. However that doesn't change the fact that if anything had happened you would really have been up shiteee creek.

I don't know what they will fine you. I believe they can take the car away from you as well. Fingers crossed for you, but most of all I hope you've learned not to do it again. ;)

Wait....so in the UK you have to pay a tax to drive? HA!!!!!!

I could write a book on the problems we have in the US, but when the state governments try to put up cameras to nab us with more fees over here the people literally rip them down!

The original idea was for the money collected to pay for the upkeep of the roads however that was changed as an emergency member in the 2nd World War or so I am led to  believe where the money was used presumably for the war effort and to this day, less than a quarter goes on the roads-the rest into the Government pot to be "invested" in all kinds of wonderful projects that enhance our lives.

I try to put on a sarcastic attitude because just thinking about the actual state of the US government makes me wanna puke.  Here in Texas they are thinking of changing some major highways into toll routes because the Texas government is "not exactly sure where all the money went."   :? Just dandy!

Maybe they could do something about every poor bloke having a gun so I don't have to worry about being shot on the way home while their at it  :shock:

If you get killed by a driver it doesn't really matter whether they have Tax or not, you won't be hovering above the accident thinking 'and he hasn't even got a tax disc, tut-tut'.   :?

You won't get points for no tax, you may get away with it as you just bought the car and had applied for it. I've done it in the past before we had this big brother state and its no big deal compared to what some people do. There are people in London with no anything, not even a license and they couldn't give a $%&# about it. On some of the big routes here, the Police will have a car transporter lorry with them, set up a road block and when the trailer is full they drive it off and they all get impounded. They have a van about a 1/4 of a mile up the road scanning the number plates. The info response on a scanned number plate is now 8 seconds, by which time the scanned car is approaching around 10 traffic cops with BMWs and motorbikes in case a bit of hot pursuit is required! There are mobile camera vans on the prowl all the time now.

There is a tax for imported products here called "desembaraço alfandegário" what means "customs' disembarrassment" :lol: I think that it is illegal, but it's legal... Just for the sake of laught
But things are done like that you said, they create a "momentary" tax to cover some problem and then "forget" to end the tax when the problem is solved... that sucks!

Americans have road tax, the system is just different and linked to the license plate.

Give the DVLA a call and explain the situation, acknowledge that you've been daft driving without insurance, but keep reinforcing your stance that you didn't think you were committing an offence as the documents were in transit.

Remember - don't lose your temper or be sarcastic, you were in the wrong and are asking for help.  I work in customer relations and you'd be amazed what a well-disposed customer can get if they ask politely.
