Best guitar riff
« on: November 27, 2009, 01:39:44 PM »
The BBC News site has a story up about the best guitar riffs.  ---> http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8382171.stm

Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Child came top in the poll.  I was wondering what the list would look like if the BKP forum had looked at it from a players point of view.  The same?  a little different?  So what do you guys think?

My top 3 would have to be...

Free - All Right Now
Metallica - Enter Sandman
Rage Against the Machine - Bulls on Parade
Cold Sweat set in Mockingbird NJ Classic > Boss GT6 > Sansamp PSA > VHT 2/90/2 > Zilla 2x12 cab > =D

I would argue that a lot of the BBC ones aren't riffs.  A riff to me is a short, often repeated phrase, and part of the 'rhythm' of a musical composition - not the lead.  That rules out Voodoo Chile, Sweet Child O Mine etc in my eyes.  They're lead lines.

My top 3 riffs are:

1.  Whole Lotta Rosie - AC/DC
2.  Girl's Got Rhythm - AC/DC
3.  Whole Lotta Love - Led Zepplin

I'm not saying these are the best, but they were the first that sprang to mind and they're certainly some of my favourites:

Mississippi Queen - Mountain
Rock And Roll, Hoochie Koo - Rick Derringer
Shot Down In Flames - AC/DC
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

The voting seems to have been by the readers of Music Radar website  rather than a BBC thing. I don't think I could answer this very easily-I'd have to give it some thought.
Send three and fourpence we're going to a dance

It cant be done. I'd have to make my own top 100 and it would change daily.

I can't decide either, but I do have a theory about good riffs

in the context of a song, bad riffs make good riffs better due to the contrast :D

so if a whole song is all good riffs, they become average riffs and therefore no longer good

La Grange  :o  Can't believe I didn't put that in my list!!!

It's hard to come up with a "top few" in a short space of time.

The greatest riff of all time is Funeralopolis by Electric Wizard. 2nd place up to infinity are debatable.
