Henry's are nigh on immortal.

My cousins own a pet shop chain, they have Henry hoovers in every shop and they get used to hoover up all sorts, dirty sawdust out cages etc, and they still take years to break.

Henry's are pretty damn good hoovers - have used them often and liked them and they aren't too expensive.
The Miele has better suction I think and is quieter in use in my experience.

I have 3 Vacuum cleaners - an electroluxe that is the main shop vac, a Trend special workshop vac that in some ways isn't even as good as the Electroluxe and the Miele which I rate the most.

The Electrluxe has been a real trooper and is in use most days in the shop
The Trend lurks under a bench and I keep promising to use it more
The Miele is the one that comes out once a week to really make the place clean though as it does the best job - mine has a turbo brush attachment that makes it work like an upright cleaner

The only downside with the Miele for workshop use is that the dust bags are a little small - although they are excellant to use.
My girlfriend alo has the same Miele  and loves it as she has a long haired Persian cat that is constantly shedding fur (it seems to shed enough fur that you could harvest it, spin it into a yarn & knit a jumper from it every week)

We have a Henry and it works fine and has great tone.

Try using the US Congress. They really suck.

I would say Nilfisk (if you can get it in the UK), Miele or an Electrolux. I got an Electrolux now and it seems pretty good, but I got no real knowledge in the vacuum cleaner department.

So, just for the sake of "closure" as our American cousins say, today I went out and bought a Henry.

Half the price of a cheap Dyson, and build like a tank - great design too, no fiddly bits for my wife to break off.

Had a quick play on it, and it sucks like a demon!  Cracking purchase, I think!!!

Zakk Wylde or Eddie Van Halen probably merchandise a 'signature' model ...
