Don't you just hate it when new neighbours move in?
« on: November 29, 2009, 02:45:35 PM »
I have new neighbours in the flat above me.  They seem very nice, they haven't got small kids or large pets and they're not noisy (apart from when they've had the builders in remodelling the place, but that's mostly when I'm out).

But today they've run their washing machine for the first time.  I now have a couple of gallons of water dripping into my kitchen and although they've stopped the machine, of course, it's still dripping and it looks like it's spreading into my hallway ceiling.... could be just a matter of time before I have to start emptying the bookshelves.....  :(

What happened, broken pipe?

Hope you can find a solution, this stinks... :(

You should definitely mention it to your neighbours. It could be a leak in their machine, or they could have broken a pipe or something when having the washing machine installed.

Yeah, I've had a chat with them.  Apparently they diverted some piping to relocate the washing machine, so I reckon there's a broken pipe or dodgy joint somewhere.  Very dodgy - it leaked enough to keep dripping for over 3 hours!

Anyway, it's stopped now (fingers crossed).

Their builders are in tomorrow, so they're going to look at it.  It'll mean taking floorboards up, so I hope they don't rush it and mess it up.

Forgot to mention, Fernando, one of my new neighbours is a compatriot of yours!  :)  The wife's Brazilian, the husband is Italian.

Bummer... the leak bit, not the Brazilian bit...

I've only ever caused leaks in the flat below, never been on the receiving end, but it's a nightmare all round - especially when it's someone else's fault (ie neither the leaker nor the leakee are actually responsible or even know how to fix it... downstairs gets damp on a wall - it could from our kitchen or our bathroom, or even from the roof, but our landlord has paid cowboys to tw@t about with it a few times, but no-one's ever been entirely sure it's fixed... we and her downstairs know it's not...)

Hope it gets sorted easily/fast at your place...

That's good, hope they don't mess with you
Brazilians tend to be very "non-british", I guess

  I never crank anything.  I'm the quietest neighbour you could possibly imagine.

But with top floor flats you get the roof!  So you could still end up with water damage.

As it stands, there's probably only about 10 quid of damage..... but I'll let you know.

I suffer from the new neighbour problem too, suprisingly.

The problems are never as invasive as yours though, good luck Phil.

If you do sue then it might be the contractor that you go for if they had someone in to do the work. But as you say, if it is superficial then it is not worthwhile.

My best advice to avoid neighbour trouble is: Buy a house  (I live in a flat myself, but sometimes wish I owned a house)

The neighbours can still be annoying, but at least their washing machines won't cause you trouble.

I'd love to buy a house, but right now I've got 20 years' clutter crammed into a one bedroom flat.  And the bathroom needs doing, the kitchen needs doing, the windows need doing..... it would be an absolute nightmare to sort out.  I can't motivate myself to do it, or to spend all that money.

I'm a world champion procrastinator.  Never, ever jump whilst you can just do nothing and wait for someone else to push you.
