New Amp time
« on: December 03, 2009, 05:28:04 AM »
Hello everyone Merry Christmas. I will get to the point here. I dig my Orange TT, but I am thinking about getting something else. Someone here offered me a good hunk of money for my set up. I am tempted to accept but i want to know what i should ask Santa for first. I am thinking along the lines of something Marshall sounding. I love that roar. I have heard good stuff about Ceriatones, and I would buy the jcm but alas Its a 50 watt amp and my neighbors will sue me if I use it. So It has to be something quieter than 50 watts and an upgrade from my current sound. Anyone know of a JCM 800ish sounding amp but quieter. I am led to think that what I have is pretty good, but I am always open to better options. Do you all think that nik at ceriatone could do a lower wattage JCM. Or a half power option maybe.
I await your responses.

What about the Ceriatone + a quality attenuator?

Also, there are amp builders around these here parts that use the London Powerscalling system, that might be worth a look.

I quite fancy a Ceriatone myself, although given the fact that I c--k up BYOC pedal builds I'll probably be taking my life in my hands...

What about getting the jcm from mjw and getting him to add hower scaling. So you can run it down to 5 watts

Good idea but perhaps the cost of Malaysia -> UK -> Mexico might be prohibitive.
Perhaps there is an amp tech relatively local to you that could fit power scaling to the Ceriatone?

Awesome I will investigate the power scaling. Who of you has experience with that. That may be the best option. How much do such modifications cost? And is there a way to flip a switch and return it to its normal 50 watt state? Also when the power is scaled down how does it sound. I imagine that its totally different sounding at 15 watts that its full 50. The term scaled down leads me to think that it would sound the same but just scaled down. Also any of you who know of any other low watt models dont hesitate to chime in.

Here's some clips of the Suhr Badger 18 and 30 models. Both have power scaling. Hope you find the clips useful.

I've had a couple of Power Scaled amps, and still own one of them, which is my #1.

To turn the PS off, you basically wind the power control to 'full' and it's full power again.  A bit like a master volume.

It sounds a little bit different at lower voltage because the speakers aren't working as hard - nothing you do can replicate that cranked speaker part of the tone.  The power scaling lets you dial in some power valve gain which fattens the tone up, which is the real strength of the technology.  I'm a big fan, but you need to be prepared to tweak a couple of controls to get it sounding perfect for you.

I have power scaling on my 18w MJW amp.
Works great as long as you reduce the pre-amp gain in relation to the amount of power scaling that you dial in.
As long as you are still working the speaker the tone will be good.
