Prefer this version of it, again went out live on saturday morning

Nice try but... WTF?

Totally misses the point and becomes MUZAC.  :?

I have to agree.  That was dreary and, to be honest, pretty painful to listen to.

I never read the NME and if that pretentious, anti hero, trendy article is anything to go by I wont start

The part that annoyed me was when he said 'its a seventeen year old song!' as if that somehow makes it redundant.
I think the point is WTF choose an old American song to get behind (awesome though it is). If we can't come up with a current British act to get behind then maybe we should STFU moaning about X-Factor. This campaign would be far more meaningful if it were supporting some highly talented emerging British artist, as it is it makes us sound like our parents going "that's not proper music, you should listen to some politically charged rap metal" .

That's a really good point that hadn't occurred to me. I do think the sentiment is right though.

I don't think the point is to say "here's something better than the X Factor".  How would you ever get agreement on something that subjective anyway?

It didn't need to be RATM, it didn't even need to be anything good.

It's just getting behind something - anything - to tell Simon Cowell he doesn't actually have total control of the entertainment and music industry (even though he's increasingly convinced he does).

^ +1

I've been saying this every time the whole RATM/X-Factor discussion has come up recently.  I accept that the actual band used to front this two-fingered-salute at Cowell is pretty irrelevant, but it would've been better for a UK band to have received the free publicity (and royalties).

At least we know that RATM are passing the proceeds to Shelter, so the money is going to good use.

There should be a website where a single is backed/bought each week in this same manner and we send an otherwise unlikely band to the top spot.  Imagine Lawnmover Deth's Watch Out Grandma being played on Radio1

Hey... If you develop that idea a little more and keep it national, put together some good administration and a competant management team, possibly a charismatic frontman to spearhead it and you've just invented....

The X Factor.  :?

Exactly.  I would have been just as happy buying The Birdie Song to stick two fingers up at Cowell.  ;)

I mentioned this on another forum somewhere, it would be way better if the public nominated one unsigned act who had a single available and spam the buy button on that every christmas. That way, we inject new blood into the public view, get something very different in the charts and make some hard working up-and-coming musician(s) have a nice christmas surprise.  :D

That way, we inject new blood into the public view, get something very different in the charts and make some hard working up-and-coming musician(s) have a nice christmas surprise.  :D

But how would that work?  Who'd decide on the shortlist?  How would people who'd never heard of these unsigned acts be made aware of them?

Even if we managed to do it, wouldn't it be a bit unfair on the thousands of other unsigned acts?  This one act would have an advantage more because of the way it was chosen than because of the quality of the music.  Just like an X Factor Christmas single in fact.....

People keep saying "let's find a good song by a little known artist and put it in the Christmas charts".  But can't we do that already?  There's nothing stopping us.

Maybe we could all find our own favourite little known artists - or even well known artists - and buy their songs.  We could add up the sales every week and call it "The Charts".

We should just agree to have Slade and Roy Wood at #1, alternating each year.

You mean Simon 'It's not fair...' Cowell?

"Joe deserves to be number 1..."

I like the idea of Slade/Wizard and maybe The Pretenders too - just make sure this largesse does not extend to Chris de Burgh.....

Just so bored of this...RATM couldn't they have got a great song instead of a dated one(liked it first time around) but surely if going for old why not a british classic..like the stones...etc(just an example)..and although not an X factor fan is it fair to stop some young kids career/shot at fame even if he is only around for christmas

^ i disagree with that logic. xfactor is stopping plenty of other people from getting their shot at fame. It's not a vacuum, if x factor gets the number one, someone else doesn't.

We should just agree to have Slade and Roy Wood at #1, alternating each year.

haha, yeah. and maybe throw in the darkness every fifth year for a laugh.
