New pickups for my Gibson Les Paul Custom in Silverburst
« on: December 13, 2009, 12:12:37 AM »
***EDIT: ADMIN, please move this to the PICKUPS section***

Hi guys,

on Friday a dream came true for me - I bought a Gibson LPC in Silverburst. And I still have a big grin all over my face.

It's the 2009 model and this lady is very heavy, 4,8kg (10,6lbs). It has incredible sustain.
I played various other Customs in the store but this one was by far the heaviest and had by far the ballsiest tone.
You can see her on the picture next to my Nailbomb equipped ESP Eclipse.

It has the usual custom specs: Mahogany body & neck, maple top, ebony fretboard.

To my ears the guitar is very balanced sounding. It does not overemphasize any frequencies - but it is quite bright compared to a standard Les Paul.

It is currently equipped with 490R and 498T pickups - which I will replace with BKPs. The question is which ones!?...

I like the stock pickups better than expected but they are a bit harsh and sizzling in the highs.
I want the new pickups to
- have more clarity and definition
- be tighter
- have no sizzling highs
- clean up better!
- have a fair amount of mids (not more than the stock PUs)

The new pickups should not be scooped as I like mids. But I don't want them to be in the Painkiller ballpark, that's too much for my tastes.

I want the neck pickup to produce crystal clear, bell like and warm cleans.
The bridge pickup should be great for tight, punchy and huge sounding rythm sounds. It should be thick sounding, but not boomy in the bass!
It also should be able to handle nice crunch tones.

I mainly play a range from Alternative Rock to Progressive Metal. Tunging is normally half a step down or dropped C#.

I already did a LOT of research here on BKP before I bought the guitar. But before I share my thoughts, I'm eager to hear your pickup recomendations and experiences.

I quickly recorded a few clean, crunch and heavy tunes to give you an idea how the LPC sounds with the current pickups.

Thanks in advance for your input
