I recognised the guitar - I even pointed it out to the missus... but I didn't realise it was actually him playing it!!

I'd never heard of her. Didn't reckon much to her voice, but the shoulder pads were impressive...

We only watched the program because of Hugh Grant - and if I hadn't been flicking channels at the wrong moment just before we went to bed, I might have escaped altogether!

That is sorta strange....even if you don't listen to pop whatsoever there is no way you could've not heard about acts like Rihanna or Lady Gaga by now  :?:

 I've heard of Lady Gaga - I've even seen film of her performing... not entirely sure whether she's a serious artiste or not though - seems a bit too p1ssed to get too far (unless it's an act?), and her career seems to be more about appearing in the newspapers than music.

Wouldn't recognise her if you played me a recording - not a hope in hell...

Umbrella what?

On the radio I listen to BBC Radio 4 and nothing else. On the TV, I might watch Later with Jools, but I usually sleep through it. That's about it.

It's been like that for at least 15 years... how am I gonna know what these modern folks is like?

You'd actually be horrifed about some of the "huge acts" I know nothing about and have no urge to find out about...

Eg, Extreme, themselves, other than the name, and I think one hit with lots of vocals on, are a bit of an unknown quantity to me. They seemed a promising outfit following the path of Queen, and then nothing happened... not surprising I didn't recognise Nuno the other night! I kind of viewed them (and still do) as "young upstarts" like Guns and Roses and the like - I tried to get excited but none of them were really my thing (eg I have "Appetite" but have never found it remotely listenable unlike many of my peers - they seemed to be bad copies of a bunch of other stuff, I found myself wanting to listen to the other stuff instead...)

Bear in mind I'm talking about Extreme and GnR here - anything after that is probably unknown to me! I felt a little burst of interest during BritPop, I have Pulp's Different Class (superb), and all of Oasis's early albums (not sure why anymore), some other stuff I can't remember now - but then the music industry subsided again into plastic generated stuff like this girl the other night, and regurgitated rock stuff... I kinda lost interest again and went back to researching what I missed in the 60s and 70s...

I have to admit that even my wife gets surprised by me not knowing a recent "hit" - but how am I going to know it if I haven't heard it?

Those "young upstarts" are the same age as you!  At least, they're exactly the same age as me, and I don't think you're very much older.

You really did take yourself out of the loop early Andy!

Yep... that's about it

Hope no-one's getting me wrong here - I am kinda dismissing a load of stuff for my own personal listening, but there's no way I'd want to dismiss it for anyone else. This girl the other night obviously makes records that people want to buy, and that's good... but she left me a bit cold myself, so I doubt I'll even remember her name in a few weeks.

And then on the regurgitators: I love those that regurgitate music/vibes that I like, that touches me, eg The Black Crowes, Ocean Colour Scene, arch regurgitators both... and I have all of their output. But other stuff like Coldplay and, er, can't think of any other names - just name any act of the last x years - they're regurgitating stuff that doesn't grab me... it's all good, but I haven't got the time, money, or inclination to chase it.

I have, in fact, done what my Dad always said I would: "grown up" (yuk!!). The only difference is that where he stopped listening to Buddy Holly, Elvis, etc, I've carried on listening to what I liked, and I still spend money on music, and I still have my hair! (and it's now somewhat longer than James May's!).

That's interesting, because when I hear new(er) bands who I think are just doing something I've heard before, I tend to dismiss them and stick to the originals.  That said, I'd acknowledge the two you mentioned, the Black Crowes and Ocean Colour Scene, are both good bands, though neither are quite my cup of tea.

Yeah, me too (not the hair bit).  I still like my old stuff and I find new stuff increasingly hard to get into.  But it's not so much the music (though the "heard it all before" syndrome applies).  It's more that I find the way they dress and act increasingly ridiculous - they take themselves so seriously and actually believe that wearing black, letting your hair hang in your eyes and scowling makes you look enigmatic and moody.

Yes, I know we were the same at that age!  .  But music's supposed to be a laugh innit?

As well as having Nuno playing live the album has a track featuring Slash.

I remember in my early teens I'd spend whole weekends going through my dads immense record collection totally unaware of what I was listening to and hearing sounds for the first time - it sounds corny as hell but it was magic. Problem is, the more discerning and selective you become about genres you listen to you can pigeon hole yourself and not realize you're missing out on some great music.

Anyway...Rihannas new album has stupidly good production and song arrangement. The lyrics pass me by though.

F**K me... Is he going bankrupt?

The price they are asking for his surplus (historic) guitars is highway robbery!

I think Nuno owes some major back taxes...  :?

i think lady gaga writes music for other popstars, and i think she writes her own stuff, too. the image thing is just that, if anything she's the most musical of the current crop of popstars, as far as i can tell.

rihanna is fairly good too.

pop music is actually as good as i can ever remember it being. it's king compared to the late 90s, anyway, when it was all dance guff like the darn vengaboys.
