selmer treble n bass questions
« on: December 20, 2009, 03:55:18 PM »
I just bought a mk3 ( silicon rectifier) and am really enjoying it- it's quite a novelty to me to play through a crunchy amp after having mainly Fenders or AC50.
But I've noticed the output valves are mis-matched, one is much fatter than usual, and I was wondering if anyone can recommend good el34's for this amp. Also, which speakers do you like to play it through? I've got a 2x12 with a g12h30 and alnico gold and I think the gold suits it best- the g12 is a bit harsh on the top end.

just because the EL34s look physically different, doesn't mean they aren't matched in terms of current draw.  However, if you want to pop some new EL34s in there, go for some Winged=C= ones.  If you have a bit more money to spend, get some NOS Mullards, brown-base Teslas or Siemens.

if the top end is a bit harsh, you might also try some 6L6s in there (depending on the plate voltage), but that will require a small tweak of the bias circuit.

the main reason that the Selmer T&B amps are quite bright is that the presence is hard-wired on full.  a reasonably competent tech could tweak this for you, or even install a presence pot on the back of the amp in place of one of the speaker output jacks.  I think this will give you what you're looking for from the Selmer - I've owned loads of them over the years and used to gig a pair of mkII heads.

where are you based?

thanks for the info-I reckon I'll give my amp to a tech to check the valves out and I think it's biased hot because it gets crunchy at quarter volume.
I'm based in Bristol by the way.

those amps should be fairly clean up to around 1/3 volume - the EL34s might be biased on the hot side, but I do seem to recall the mkIII T&B heads to be not quite as pokey in terms of volume.  plus, it could have some mods done to it already to make it crunch up earlier.

good luck with that one, I love those amps (very under-rated)

I've been meaning to try those for a while - will need to build myself a simple little single ended amp so I can try out various valves quickly and easily.
