Pick ups for LP, MM's to hot!!

Hey

I recently purchased the miracle man and after using it now for a few weeks im finding that it is a little to hot!!
 
I play a Marshall vintage Modern, for those of you not familiar with this amp it is designed so that you control all your guitar tone(clean/distorted) through the guitars volume.
 
Allthough the mm is an awesome pick up and performs fantastic when you roll back on the volume there is pretty much no respose untill you get it down to 2 or 3 where you get a very dirty clean, there is no middle!

I am more of a hard rock guitar player than metal and feel they are maybe just a little to metal!
 
I also have a Mule in the neck and dont find that they sound that great together!!
 
Im really looking for a pickup able to produce tones from the likes of Slash, Jimi Page, acdc, Van halen  etc.. but able to really make those harmonics scream when needed!!
 
Im thinking about getting the BLACK DOG but have a feeling it may not be hot enough?
 
How do you think the cold sweats would react to the guitar volume being backed off a bit?
 
Also how will they sound paired with the mule?

Its a weakness of the MM in particular that it doesnt like to be backed off. Its pretty much an on or off metal pickup, in my experience. Its great at what it does, but what it does is metal.

Ironically the warpig(s - c-pig as well), painkiller and ceramic nailbomb, all of which are hotter pickups back off better. As do the nailbomb and cold sweat, both of which are a little less hot than the MM, but fairly comparable in output.

For your sounds, though, a very hot pickup isnt really a good idea. I wouldve said the MM was way too powerfull and insufficiently versatile. Black dog isnt a bad idea. Nor is riff raff, crawler, abraxis, VHII, cold sweat.

All things considered, I'd say that I hope that slash isnt the most important tone in there (A2 mule for that, I reckon) and get a riff raff.

contact THE man-Tim is always right!I have a couple of Standards..one with Crawlers/one with rebs..they both perform well in the applications you mentioned..my buddy has a Classic with B Dogs,and they do great as well....since you have a Mule in the neck(and I take it you like it..), a Mule in the bridge may be just the thing for you

what is it with people underestimating the black dog? with a marshall vintage modern i'm sure it would be most definitely hot enough, of course, depending on the volume you play at, but it does nice heavy creamy overdrive, and when over the top, it just kills, gently :D

riff raff's may be my choice though, as i think black dogs would be too dark for a standard. that's what tim recommended me for an all mahogany 8 string guitar. then again, ask tim! i'm sure he has an alternative for a MM-like tone but not as hot.

I would have never picked a Miracle Man to cop the tones of the players you've listed.

Tim recommended the MULE but im still torn between that, The Black Dogs and the Rebel Yell's!

I've had Mules, Black Dogs, Crawlers, Emeralds, Cold Sweats, Warpigs, Nailbombs and a Miracle Man in my Les Paul. 

The Abraxas set that I currently have in there are the best yet - classic PAF tone, but with enough extra grunt for heavier styles when needed (more vintage tones still sound nice and organic too).

Abraxas is what you want.

never tried the black dogs... i love my rebel yells, they're powerful enough for metal retaining a clarity that many more aggressive pickups lose, and yet can sound great on lower gain settings... the mules sound great, but they're too mild for my needs. you can play metal with them, but it won't sound too good... currently i'm getting my bridge mule swapped for another rebel yell... the neck mule sounds too good and it'll stay for sure!

so, if MMs are just too aggressive for you but you don't want to downgrade to a pure rock pickup, albeit a great one, RY are an excellent choice.

As a MM and BD user... yeah.. Black Dog would work. The mid range detail works nicely on leads. It is not the smoothest pickup though, it still has an edge to its sound in the upper tones.
