Installing pickups - what am I doing wrong???
« on: January 02, 2010, 02:58:40 AM »
A couple of years ago I bought a warpig with the intention of installing it in a jackson flying V I purchased - I've run into problem after problem with this, and am begining to regret ever bothering with it! Long story short I've finally found 1 meg pots in the correct size & made them fit, and got a switch that works - I've been following this wiring diagram: http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=2h_1v_1t_3w

The guitar has a duncan jazz in the neck (I've soldered the green & bare wires to the back of the volume pot, the black to the switch, and the red & white are soldered & taped together) and the warpig in the bridge (black & bare soldered to the back of the volume pot, red to the switch, green & white soldered & taped together). The circuit is earthed (by the tone pot, as marked) to the bridge, as well as to 2 pins screwed into the wood underneath each pickup. The rest is wired exactly as instructed on the diagram, yet when I plug the guitar in, there is a loud buzzing along with the signal, as if the guitar wasn't earthed - which disappears when I touch any metal component on the guitar.

Am I doing something wrong? Should I just take the guitar to a local repairer? I've spent more money than this guitar is worth already, ideally I don't want to spend any more.

It does sound like something is amiss on the grounding side of the circuit

The worst case scenario is that the earth and hot wires are reversed at some point (often at the jack)
It could be that the earthing doesn't make it's way back to the earth side of the jack socket
I always recommend star grounding or similar
Think of it like a series of little rivers running into a larger river that eventually runs out to the sea
So all the earth connections all lead to the same place and eventually out of the guitar
I tend to have one pot that is connected to the earth of the jack via a good wire and have connecting wires from each pot leading to that pot.
Some companies rely upon the pots & switches being on a metal plate or foil to give this earth connection- I don't trust this method and always neatly solder connections

It could be that something is touching inside where it shouldn't but that would usually result in a short circuit & silence rather than a hum.

Hi there, I'm having exactly the same problem with 2 Warpigs. Both been connected perfectly, into separate guitars which previously had EMG's fitted. I discussed the problem with Tim and he said I need to drill a hole from the bridge to the control caverty, to ensure the bridge was earthed via the volume pot. I did this, connected some really good cable to the bridge, wand soldered the other end to the volume pot. But the same problem is happening. Is it possible that there might be a bad batch of pickups? I've spent hours and hours trying to sort this and it's getting a bit frustrating now, any more tips?

Highly unlikely - although I wouldn't say impossible.

If either of you were local enough to pop in to see me I would be more than happy to look over the problem for you
