Not really, no. I'm just a fan of the idea of genres because it make's things far easier to describe quickly, and the "it all sounds alike anyway" attitude annoys me, since it's just naive at best, and willfully ignorant or deliberately condescending otherwise.
agreed. while i would agree that some people (especially mainstream newspaper music critics) have an almost OCD approach to genre-making (not to mention, getting them wrong more often than not  ), having genres is a good idea as long as you don't get too precious with them or use them as a means of alienating other people who aren't so "tr00". For example, if i say, "I like 80s metal, any suggestions for other stuff or genres I might like?", I'm not really likely to appreciate an answer along the lines of, "It's all music, d00d!"...
:)
that being said, i agree with what philly's saying too. And just because, for example, megadeth isn't as heavy as some of the more modern stuff, doesn't mean it's not metal. And i've seen, for example, ac/dc, or guns n roses referred to as metal in recent newspapers, or by people the same age as me. Problem is, much like politics, everyone (ok, almost everyone) considers themselves to be centrists. if you normally listen to necophagist, then metallica probably doesn't seem to heavy. If you normally listen to joe mcelderry, then the shadows are probably metal.
