You no like Vanessa Philly? Why no you like? Got to love a good old London slut Philly!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgZvfs9VRJg

I don't want to sound all Daily Express, Johnny, or like the judge in that Jeffrey Archer trial ("Has she elegance? Has she fragrance?" ).....

....but "good old London slut" is the problem... she just looks like a skanky old tart to me.   She might as well be dressing up in a schoolgirl uniform and all that bollocks (and no doubt she does!).

Well that's how she gets paid philly by dressing up. I'm sure she can be elegant but it probably doesn't pay the rent!
It's just an image. I think it goes well with a good 80s rock band! Also more alluring than a girl with missing limbs.

I'll concede that the music I listen to is much more "mainstream" than the music you listen to, by both our definitions.  But.... I work with a 21 year old and a 26 year old who are by no means clueless about music - yet they've never heard of nearly all the bands I like!   To them, I'm an obscurist - Winger might as well be Anaal Nathrakh.

exactly. as i said earlier, you always judge it by your own personal experience and prejudices. If you consider the objective meaning of "mainstream", then i doubt any of us on here are mainstream. some are doubtless less mainstream than others, but nobody is mainstream...

All I have in my head now are the lyrics from Sweaty Betty by the Macc Lads.

Obligatory youtub link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8bAJsjcdXA&feature=related

I nearly ran the singer over in my car. He's a historian and fatter these days. The great big poof!

Oh absolutely, various corners of the internet deride even the more obscure of the two festivals I'm involved in as mainstream (deathfest, the biggest names at which were Repulsion, Vader, Origin, Leng Tch'e, Akerc--ke...) which is obviously ludicrous. But I guess I kinda think of "mainstream" as being very accesible to a mainstream audience, rather than actually well known to them, not many folks in their teens who only listen to chart hits are going to be familiar with Glen Miller or Boston, but they'll likely find them perfectly enjoyable, less so with Alan Holdsworth and George Antheil. I think of Creed as a mainstream band for instance, regardless of the fact that not that many people in the UK, (in major music terms) know who they are.

ah, ok, yeah, i know what you mean. I guess a lot of the stuff I listen to is fairly mainstream if you're using that definition (classic rock and the like), but then again, I can't see too much of the mainstream liking, say, vinnie moore, eric johnson or guthrie govan (when he's not playing with mr rascal) either. I just like the stuff I like, and just because a mainstream audience might like it too, it doesn't make it any less valid (not that that's what you're saying, just pointing it out).

regarding the bands you mentioned at those festivals, i think i might have heard of vader.
