I like to play around with my volume controls so I'm sure I could make em quite versatile. I made a thread about it ages ago and people reckoned the Warpigs would work for me with some coil splits to get the most variety.

I'd probably get Wez to do a rewire of the pots etc (if he'd be available) as he was very helpful when I was asking about getting a custom SG made, I almost feel bad going for this over one of his due to the amount of emails sent to and from!

Here's a clip I just recorded with it :) The track is very 90s brit-pop rock I think..

http://hc.bloodyvelvet.com/files/254/sg_track1.mp3

To make this a bit useful, will warpigs be too metal voiced to get a similar tone to that? I like it at that volume, but any louder and the guitar sounds a bit too raspy and fake when compared with BKPS (Mule or Pig 90)..

you'll be able to get that general EQ, but in truth the warpigs are somewhat too compressed to be ideal for that

Well time for an update now I've had it longer (and as I'm bored!)... the guitar has had a couple of gigs now and after a setup it's easily my No.1. Each time I strap a les paul on I think "why did I ever like this so much?" a pleasure to play and I really do enjoy playing a lot more with this over my others.

Definitely not going to "upgrade" the pickups, it sounds great as it is and I actually prefer it to my bkp'd guitars :o Livelier, more character which is surprising and I just prefer the more cutting/modern tone than the smoothness of the bareknuckles. Not going to sell either of those guitars yet but they hardly ever get used any more and I could do with a bit of money for a new bike I'm planning :P

I still want to sort the pots out as I can't get a very clear clean sound as they just get muddy when you try to roll the volume down. Not really sure how to do that with these pickups as they have the ever so useless gibson circuit board/plugin interface rather than proper wires.

That's because of the pickups. The Gibson pots are very good.

I replaced the circuit board in my Faded SG because I wanted to experiment with different types of capacitors (settled on PIOs for my current set up). However, the swap from circuit board to CTS etc made not much difference.

The swap from Gibson pups to Riff Raffs (well, I bought the guitar to do that!) made much more of a difference. Summed across various amps and modellors, the Riff Raffs give me much more. And especially better response on using the volume and tone controls.

I did think the Gibson pups sounded ok, just "less". I did actually get a shock last November though. When I was trying out the AC4TV amp I bought, I used a stock Faded to try it out. It was fabulous. When I finally got round to using my Riff Raffed Faded through it... it was VERY disappointing at first. Basically, AC4TV seems to work best for me with single coils or... the stock pups that Gibson put in SGs! I've got my Riff Raffed Faded set up so I know how to get what I want through the AC4TV now - it's just a bit thicker than stock pups would do. Bear in mind we're talking about me using the AC4TV in its attenuated settings - I can't run it at the 4W setting most of the time. That "thickness" disappears as you get the amp doing what it's meant to do - and the stock pickups would suddenly start sounding thinner... Through my Laney, though, any volume, the Riff Raffed Faded just rules...

I read on here a while back a theory that stock pickups aren't voiced for gigging/professional. They're voiced for selling guitars - in other words sounding good/enticing in a busy music shop...

Similar to what we mentioned on Ian's thread about modellers.

I did once own an SG Standard (not a very good one) with the stock 490R/498T pickups; I have a Korg Pandora PX1 with a setting called "Schenk", and bizarrely that particular guitar with those pickups would nail an absolutely perfect Michael Schenker tone.  No other guitar came close.  It was like magic!

I have to say, that theory sounds a bit Ed Roman-esque....

Or even, dare I say it, self-justification for "I/you/etc must upgrade stock pickups"

EDIT: Hey wot's with the clock? Anyone else noticed that we seem to be posting at some unearthly hour? (It's actually lunchtime here in blighty-land, 12:15, not 07:15) - I did think "wow, gwem was up early!" when I posted

To me it sounds more like a capacitor just needs to be put across the pot, which is impossible/very fiddly with the circuit board thing. I've found that CTS pots still have a muddy roll off with BKPs without the cap across it.
