Weird Problem With My G String

I did some work on my Tele last night, tried to get rid of the static scratching across the scratchplate, smoothed out the frets a little etc.

Then I restrung it for a test.

I now find that when I bend the G string for what would be a whole-tone interval, it SOUNDS like a half tone...

I can't see it catching anywhere, and the other strings bend as I'd expect them to.

I've bought bad sets of strings before, but never like this.  Any ideas what it could be?

Weird, I saw the thread title and was ready for nut problems and resonance behind the nut problems - both of which I've had on Gs on Fenders... but I wasn't expecting this...

does it go back in tune to g when you release the bend?

Yeah, otherwise perfectly in tune.

It is, even up to the 21st.

Got to be the string, but I'm buggered if I know how it can work like that...

Problem has gone.

Just picked up my tele from Bob over at Legra, he gave the frets some TLC after my bodge job of a fret dress.  Plays like a dream now.

Must have been a bad G string.  Never, ever seen that before though.

Some pickguards are terrible for build up of static and it comes through the amp too.
Changing the guard is one way to solve it I guess
Another is to like the back of the guard with copper foil and solder a wire from that shield to the earth of the guitar (back of pot etc)

A temporary fix / diagnostic measure I once read about on the T.D.P.R.I. forum ,  was to wipe the static prone scratch plate with one of those fabric conditioner sheets you throw in the tumble dryer.  It worked on my Strat very nicely .  :)

Good idea, I'll give that a go.

I earthed the scratchplate (or rather Bob at Legra fixed my piss-poor attempt at doing so while also fixing my piss-poor attempts at fret dressing...), but there's still some scratching.  I might get another one, see if that makes any difference.
