Epiphone Wilshire. Bargain!
« on: January 15, 2010, 11:57:50 AM »
£206 including shipping from Thomann!  :)

Since having a '64 Epi Olympic, which I ended up selling because the neck was extremely small, I've like the 60's styl Epi's. I fancy the full-on custom shop one, but £2500 is a bit steep.
Now they've released these cheaper ones, so at the price Thomann are knocking them out at, I couldn't resist.

I've also been interested in mini-humbuckers since seeing the Tokyo Dragons.

It's made in Indonesia, excellent quality, played well straight away, nice enough pice of wood, good fretwork etc. It's very light, which I like.
The pickups are ok (bridge) and poor (neck), being ceramic and too hot. the bridge manages ok, but the neck is pants, so I'll be swapping those out anyway, It's got a nice bitey SG-like tone, but still has good punch. I imagine it'll only be better with a set of alnico V 6.5k mini's in.
The colour is the Aged Cherry, and it doesn't show well in the pics, but it's almost identical to the top of the '64 Epi I had.

Good price, aren't there normally £270-ish in the UK?
You say the '64 has a small neck, is the Epi thicker?

Nice one, Martin!  :D

I love all those old Epi designs, along with the Gibson Juniors and Specials.

(For a second I thought you'd got a real vintage Wilshire for £206!!)

Yeah, UK prices are £290 ish when I looked.

The '64 had a very narrow nut, as well as a slim neck, which was awkward for me to play. The new Epi has a standard (I suppose) Epi/Gibson nut width and profile. Feels like a Gibson 60s neck, but slightly  flatter.

You can still get Olympics for £6-800, but the Wilshires and Coronets seem to fetch a lot more. I love the shape, and the Batwing headstock!  8)

You can see how narrow the nut was.

Now you have to paint it pink and put a Kahler on it.

Yep. In and amongst all that maths, some music nearly broke out. Nearly.
I can assure you that pinkness and Kahlers will not be happening.

i wouldn't mind getting something with minihumbuckers at some point, but i think it might have to go to the back of the list...
