DIY cables
« on: January 23, 2010, 05:55:28 PM »
I think that I might make some cables for a new pedal board that I'm planning.

Does anyone else do this?  If so, where do you source your cable and jacks?

I do it but I'm fairly lucky that I live about 30 minutes away from some shops that specialise in cables and plugs. I'm sure there must be plenty of online options though.

The best advice I can give is that I find Switchcraft jacks easiest to solder to though they aren't cheap, and you should take care not to melt through the jacket of the cable when you crimp the end of the plug.
Oh, and don't forget:
Put the barrel of the plug on the cable before you start soldering

It's worth getting some heatshrink tubing too.

Studiospares have a good choice of cables and plugs.

Yeah, the last lot of cables I made up (they were mic cables, but more or less the same thing) I got my parts from Studiospares.  I used Neutrik hardware, they seemed really well made.

At work (commercial recording studio), for instrument cables, we use VDC (Van Damme) cable, with Neutrick connectors... nice and easy to make up, and very durable :)
